b5

Gree Split AC

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

b5 means the outdoor refrigerant pipe temperature sensor has a fault or failed reading. This sensor is used for defrost timing and system protection. A loose clip, corroded wire, or failed sensor are the most common causes.

Affected Models

  • Gree FAIRY Series
  • Gree LOMO Series
  • Gree U-MATCH Series
  • Gree PULAR Series
  • Gree Inverter Split System

Common Causes

  • Sensor probe clip dislodged from the outdoor refrigerant pipe
  • Sensor wire corroded or broken from outdoor weather exposure
  • Sensor thermistor has failed and reads open circuit or short circuit
  • Connector at the outdoor PCB is loose or oxidised
  • Water ingress into the outdoor unit damaged the sensor or wiring

How to Fix It

  1. Turn off the AC and switch off the outdoor unit circuit breaker.

The outdoor unit must be powered down before any inspection.

  2. Locate the outdoor pipe temperature sensor — a small thermistor probe clipped to the outdoor refrigerant coil pipe.

On most Gree split units, this probe is clipped to the large suction pipe on the outdoor coil.

  3. Check that the probe clip is firmly attached to the pipe and has good thermal contact.

A dislodged clip causes the sensor to read ambient air temperature instead of pipe temperature, triggering b5.

  4. Trace the sensor wire to the outdoor PCB connector and confirm it is fully seated.

Outdoor units are exposed to temperature cycling and vibration — connectors can work loose over time.

  5. If clip and connector are secure but b5 persists, call a technician to test sensor resistance.

A failed thermistor must be replaced — a sensor with correct resistance and correct positioning should clear b5.

When to Call a Professional

Call a technician if visual inspection does not reveal an obvious loose sensor. They will test sensor resistance and confirm the fault. Sensor replacement is a low-cost repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the outdoor pipe sensor do in a Gree AC?

This sensor monitors the temperature of the outdoor refrigerant coil pipe. It is primarily used to control defrost cycles in heating mode — preventing the outdoor coil from freezing over. Without it, the system cannot defrost safely.

Will my Gree AC still cool with a b5 error?

The unit may refuse to run or will run with limited function while b5 is active. In cooling mode, the missing defrost sensor is less critical, but the safety system still prevents normal operation. Get the sensor fixed for reliable operation.

Is the b5 sensor the same as the F2 sensor?

They are both outdoor temperature sensors but monitor different points. F2 monitors the outdoor coil itself. b5 monitors the outdoor refrigerant pipe — a slightly different location used for different protection functions. Your technician will know the difference.
