E2
Gree Split AC
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
E2 means the indoor evaporator coil is getting dangerously cold and is about to ice over. The AC shuts down to prevent the coil from freezing solid. A clogged air filter is the most common cause — clean it first.
Affected Models
- Gree FAIRY Series
- Gree LOMO Series
- Gree U-MATCH Series
- Gree PULAR Series
- Gree Inverter Split System
Common Causes
- Clogged indoor air filter reducing airflow across the coil
- Low refrigerant charge causing the coil to run too cold
- Indoor fan motor not running at the correct speed
- Running the AC in cooling mode when the room is already very cold
- Blocked return air vents or supply grilles restricting airflow
How to Fix It
-
Turn the AC off and let it sit for at least 1 hour so any ice on the coil can melt naturally.
Running the fan-only mode can help speed up the thaw. Never chip at ice on the coil — you can puncture the refrigerant lines.
-
Remove and inspect the indoor air filter. If it is grey, dusty, or visibly clogged, wash it with warm water and mild soap.
A blocked filter is the single most common cause of E2. Airflow over the coil must be strong enough to stop the coil dropping below freezing.
-
Let the filter dry completely before reinstalling. A wet filter restricts airflow almost as much as a dirty one.
Place it in a warm, ventilated spot to dry — it usually takes 30–60 minutes.
-
Check that all supply vents and return air grilles in the room are open and unobstructed.
Furniture, curtains, or closed vents starve the indoor unit of return air, which lowers coil temperature.
-
Restart the AC. If E2 returns within an hour of normal use, call a technician to check the refrigerant level.
Low refrigerant causes abnormally low coil pressure and temperature. This cannot be diagnosed without gauges.
When to Call a Professional
Call a technician if E2 persists after cleaning the filter and clearing all vents. Low refrigerant requires a licensed technician to test and recharge the system. Never attempt to add refrigerant yourself — incorrect charge causes further damage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will ice on the indoor unit go away on its own?
Yes — once you turn the AC off, ice will melt within 1 to 2 hours. Running just the fan speeds this up safely. Never chip or scrape the ice, as the coil is fragile.
How often should I clean the indoor filter?
Clean the indoor filter every 2–4 weeks during heavy use. In dusty homes or if you have pets, clean it every 2 weeks. A clean filter is the best way to prevent E2.
Can I use the AC in a room that is already 16°C to avoid E2?
Avoid running the AC in cooling mode when the room is already very cold. The coil temperature drops even lower when the room is cold, risking an ice-up. Switch to fan-only mode or turn the AC off in cool conditions.
