F2

Gree Split AC

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

F2 means the outdoor air temperature sensor has an open or short circuit. Without this reading, the AC cannot optimise its efficiency or protect itself properly. The sensor or its wiring will need professional inspection and likely replacement.

Affected Models

  • Gree FAIRY Series
  • Gree LOMO Series
  • Gree U-MATCH Series
  • Gree PULAR Series
  • Gree Inverter Split System

Common Causes

  • Sensor probe corroded or physically damaged by weather exposure
  • Sensor wire broken or chafed inside the outdoor unit casing
  • Connector at the outdoor PCB loose, corroded, or improperly seated
  • Sensor resistance outside acceptable range due to age or heat exposure
  • Outdoor PCB port damaged, preventing correct sensor readings

How to Fix It

  1. Turn the AC off at the wall switch and the circuit breaker.

Always cut power before any inspection near the outdoor unit.

  2. Check whether the AC has been exposed to unusually harsh weather or flooding recently.

Water ingress into the outdoor unit is a common cause of sensor and connector corrosion leading to F2.

  3. Attempt a full power cycle — off for 5 minutes, then back on.

Occasionally a connector vibrated loose during operation. A power cycle after the connector reseats itself can clear a false F2.

  4. If F2 returns after the power cycle, call a technician to inspect the outdoor ambient sensor and its wiring.

A technician uses a multimeter to measure sensor resistance and compare it to the specification chart for your model.

  5. Ask the technician to check the PCB connector while they are in the outdoor unit.

Corroded or bent connector pins can cause the same symptom as a failed sensor, and reseating them costs nothing extra.

When to Call a Professional

F2 sensor faults require a technician to diagnose and replace the sensor. The outdoor unit contains high-voltage components — never open it yourself. Sensor replacement is usually a quick and inexpensive repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the AC still cool the room with an F2 fault?

Some Gree models continue operating at reduced efficiency with sensor faults, while others shut down entirely. Even if the AC is still running, the F2 fault should be repaired — the unit cannot protect itself without accurate outdoor temperature data.

Is F2 expensive to fix?

Outdoor ambient temperature sensors are inexpensive parts — usually under $20. Labour cost for sensor replacement is typically 30–60 minutes of a technician's time. Total cost is usually modest unless a PCB replacement is also needed.

How long does a Gree temperature sensor last?

Sensors typically last 8–15 years under normal conditions. Outdoor sensors degrade faster due to weather, humidity, and UV exposure. If your unit is over 10 years old and showing sensor faults, multiple sensors may be near end of life.
