F5

Gree Split AC

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

F5 means the exhaust (discharge) temperature sensor has an open or short circuit. This sensor detects if the compressor is overheating — without it, the AC is running blind. A technician needs to test and replace the sensor or its wiring.

Affected Models

  • Gree FAIRY Series
  • Gree LOMO Series
  • Gree U-MATCH Series
  • Gree PULAR Series
  • Gree Inverter Split System

Common Causes

  • Sensor wire broken due to vibration fatigue over time
  • Sensor probe failed due to repeated exposure to high discharge temperatures
  • Connector at the PCB loose or corroded
  • Short circuit in the sensor wiring caused by insulation wear
  • PCB input port damaged or corroded

How to Fix It

  1. Turn the AC off at the circuit breaker.

Do not try to run the unit while a discharge temperature safety sensor is faulty. The compressor has no thermal protection without it.

  2. Try a power cycle — off for 5 minutes, then back on — to see if the fault clears.

A connector that vibrated loose can sometimes reseat itself. If F5 clears and does not return, monitor the unit closely.

  3. If F5 returns immediately, note this for the technician — it strongly suggests a broken wire or completely failed sensor.

Immediate recurrence means the fault is persistent, not intermittent. This makes diagnosis straightforward.

  4. Call a Gree-qualified technician and book a service call. Mention error code F5 when booking.

Mentioning the code upfront allows the technician to bring the correct replacement sensor to the job.

  5. While waiting for the technician, keep the AC switched off.

Without this sensor, the unit cannot trigger E4 protection. Running the AC risks undetected compressor overheating.

When to Call a Professional

Call a technician — the outdoor unit contains high-voltage components and must not be opened by untrained persons. Sensor replacement is a quick job for a trained technician. Do not continue operating the AC without this safety sensor functioning correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between F4 and F5 on Gree ACs?

F4 is the outdoor discharge pipe sensor fault and F5 is the compressor exhaust sensor fault. They monitor related but slightly different points on the discharge circuit. Both are serious sensor faults that should be repaired without delay.

Is F5 a common fault on Gree inverter ACs?

F5 is less common than filter or communication errors, but it does occur on older units. The sensor at the discharge point is exposed to extreme temperatures every time the AC runs. Units over 5–7 years old are more likely to develop sensor faults.

How long will the repair take?

A technician can usually replace a discharge temperature sensor in under an hour. If the correct part is in stock, the repair can be completed in a single visit. Parts are generally inexpensive — the main cost is the technician call-out fee.
