F6

Gree Split AC

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

F6 means the system has detected overheating and automatically slowed down the compressor to protect itself. The AC keeps running but at reduced cooling or heating capacity. Cleaning the outdoor unit usually restores full performance.

Affected Models

  • Gree FAIRY Series
  • Gree LOMO Series
  • Gree U-MATCH Series
  • Gree PULAR Series
  • Gree Inverter Split System

Common Causes

  • Dirty outdoor condenser coil trapping heat and raising system temperatures
  • Very high outdoor ambient temperature exceeding design limits
  • Low refrigerant charge causing the system to work harder and run hotter
  • Restricted airflow around the outdoor unit reducing heat rejection
  • Outdoor fan running slower than normal, reducing cooling of the condenser

How to Fix It

  1. Go to the outdoor unit and check whether the area around it is clear — remove leaves, debris, or any obstructions.

F6 is triggered by overheating. The first check is always whether the outdoor unit can breathe freely.

  2. Inspect the outdoor condenser coil fins. If dusty or clogged, rinse gently with a garden hose.

A dirty condenser cannot transfer heat efficiently. Cleaning it often reduces operating temperatures enough to stop F6 triggering.

  3. Check that the outdoor fan is spinning when the unit is running.

A slow or non-spinning outdoor fan causes rapid heat build-up. If the fan is not running normally, see error H6.

  4. If it is an extremely hot day, consider using a sunshade for the outdoor unit or increasing ventilation around it.

Gree inverter ACs can trigger F6 in extreme heat even when the unit is clean — this is normal protective behaviour, not a fault.

  5. If F6 appears regularly even in moderate weather, call a technician to check refrigerant level.

Low refrigerant forces the compressor to work harder and generate more heat, triggering F6 even when conditions are not extreme.

When to Call a Professional

Call a technician if F6 persists after cleaning the outdoor unit and clearing airflow restrictions. Low refrigerant charge requires a licensed technician to diagnose and correct. Persistent F6 faults can shorten the compressor life if not addressed.

Frequently Asked Questions

If the AC is still running with F6, do I need to fix it urgently?

F6 is not an emergency shutdown — the unit is still cooling, just at reduced power. However, the underlying overheating condition is stressing the compressor. Clean the outdoor unit and restore airflow as soon as you can.

Can F6 appear on very hot summer days without anything being wrong?

Yes — in extreme heat, even a clean, fully charged unit may trigger F6 to protect itself. If F6 only appears on very hot days and the unit is clean, this is protective behaviour. If it appears regularly in normal weather, investigate further.

What does frequency drop mean for my cooling?

A frequency drop means the inverter compressor is running at a lower speed than requested. The AC will still cool the room, but more slowly than normal. Once the system temperature drops, the compressor ramps back up to full speed automatically.
