FE

Gree Split AC

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

FE is not a fault — it means the AC is running a normal defrost cycle on the outdoor unit. White steam or mist from the outdoor unit is completely normal during this time. The cycle lasts 5–15 minutes, then the AC resumes normal operation automatically.

Affected Models

  • Gree FAIRY Series
  • Gree LOMO Series
  • Gree U-MATCH Series
  • Gree PULAR Series
  • Gree Inverter Split System

Common Causes

  • Ice has built up on the outdoor coil during heating mode operation
  • Cold outdoor temperatures causing frost to form on the outdoor unit
  • Normal scheduled defrost cycle triggered automatically by the unit
  • Humidity combined with low outdoor temperatures accelerating frost formation
  • Extended heating operation in very cold conditions

How to Fix It

  1. Do nothing — FE means the AC is doing its job correctly. Just wait.

The defrost cycle is automatic and programmed to protect the outdoor unit from ice build-up.

  2. Expect white steam or mist to come from the outdoor unit during defrost. This is melting ice turning to steam — completely normal.

Many users mistake the steam for smoke and panic. It is harmless water vapour from the ice melting off the coil.

  3. Expect indoor heating to pause temporarily while FE is active. The AC switches to fan-only or stops briefly.

The system temporarily reverses the refrigerant cycle to melt outdoor coil ice. Indoor comfort returns within 5–15 minutes.

  4. Wait for FE to clear on its own — do not turn the AC off during defrost.

Interrupting a defrost cycle forces the ice to remain on the coil, which can lead to reduced efficiency or further icing.

  5. If FE appears more than 2–3 times per hour or lasts longer than 20 minutes every time, call a technician.

Excessively frequent or prolonged defrost cycles can indicate low refrigerant or a faulty defrost sensor.

When to Call a Professional

FE does not require a technician — it is a normal operating state. If FE appears constantly and the AC never returns to normal cooling or heating, call a technician. Frequent or very long defrost cycles (over 20 minutes) may indicate low refrigerant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Gree AC stop heating and show FE in winter?

In cold weather, moisture in the outdoor air freezes on the cold outdoor coil. The AC detects this ice build-up and runs a short defrost cycle to melt it. This is essential for the heat pump to work efficiently — it is not a fault.

Is the white smoke from the outdoor unit during FE dangerous?

No — it is not smoke. It is steam from ice melting off the outdoor coil. The refrigerant is contained inside sealed pipes and never escapes as visible vapour. The steam is simply water, and it is completely harmless.

How often will my Gree AC defrost in winter?

In mild cold weather, defrost cycles may happen every 30–90 minutes. In very cold or humid conditions, defrost may trigger more frequently. Each cycle should take no more than 10–15 minutes — this is normal and expected.
