H1

Gree Split AC

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

H1 is not a fault — it means the AC is running its automatic defrost or self-cleaning cycle. This is a programmed maintenance mode that protects and maintains the unit. The AC will resume normal operation automatically when the cycle finishes.

Affected Models

  • Gree FAIRY Series
  • Gree LOMO Series
  • Gree U-MATCH Series
  • Gree PULAR Series
  • Gree Inverter Split System

Common Causes

  • Automatic defrost cycle triggered during heating mode in cold weather
  • Self-cleaning cycle initiated automatically after extended operation
  • User manually activated the self-cleaning function via the remote control
  • Scheduled maintenance mode programmed into the unit
  • Normal frost detection triggering the defrost response

How to Fix It

  1. Relax — H1 means the AC is doing its job. No action is needed from you.

This is a normal and necessary part of how the AC maintains itself. Interfering with it can cause problems.

  2. During a defrost cycle, expect steam or mist from the outdoor unit and a pause in indoor heating. This is normal.

The AC temporarily reverses to melt ice on the outdoor coil. Indoor airflow may slow or stop briefly.

  3. During a self-cleaning cycle, expect the indoor fan to run at different speeds. The unit may feel warm or blow different air than usual.

Self-cleaning cycles heat the indoor coil to kill mould and bacteria, then blow air to dry the coil. This takes 30–60 minutes.

  4. Do not turn the AC off while H1 is displayed. Let the cycle complete naturally.

Interrupting a self-cleaning cycle leaves moisture inside the unit, which promotes mould growth — the opposite of the intended purpose.

  5. Wait for H1 to disappear — the unit will return to your selected mode automatically.

Defrost cycles typically take 5–15 minutes. Self-cleaning can take up to 60 minutes depending on settings.

When to Call a Professional

H1 never requires a technician — it is a planned maintenance mode. If H1 appears constantly and the unit never returns to normal operation, call a technician. Excessively frequent H1 cycles in heating mode may indicate low refrigerant.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the self-cleaning mode on a Gree AC?

Self-cleaning heats the indoor evaporator coil to about 56°C to kill mould and bacteria. Then it runs the fan to dry the coil completely, leaving no moisture for mould to grow. Gree recommends running self-cleaning once a month during heavy use periods.

Why does my Gree AC show H1 every day in winter?

In cold weather, frost forms on the outdoor unit regularly during heating mode. The AC automatically triggers defrost cycles as often as needed — this is normal. Frequent H1 in cold weather is a sign the unit is working correctly.

Does H1 use a lot of electricity?

Defrost cycles use a small amount of energy and last only a few minutes. Self-cleaning uses more energy but is a one-time 30–60 minute cycle. Neither mode causes a noticeable increase in your electricity bill.
