H5

Gree Split AC

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

H5 means the Intelligent Power Module — the inverter component that drives the compressor — has entered protection mode. The IPM shuts down to prevent itself from overheating or being damaged by power fluctuations. Clean the outdoor unit and check the power supply as first steps.

Affected Models

  • Gree FAIRY Series
  • Gree LOMO Series
  • Gree U-MATCH Series
  • Gree PULAR Series
  • Gree Inverter Split System

Common Causes

  • IPM overheating due to dirty outdoor unit restricting heat dissipation
  • Poor ventilation inside the outdoor unit casing around the IPM board
  • Power supply voltage fluctuations stressing the IPM
  • Ageing IPM board with reduced thermal capacity
  • Compressor drawing excessive current and overloading the IPM

How to Fix It

  1. Turn the AC off at the circuit breaker and let it rest for 30 minutes.

The IPM has a thermal protection threshold. It needs time to cool down before it will allow a restart.

  2. Clean the outdoor condenser coil and ensure clear airflow around all sides of the outdoor unit.

The IPM board is cooled partly by the outdoor unit airflow. A dirty or blocked outdoor unit raises IPM temperature.

  3. Check the supply voltage if possible. Significant voltage fluctuations can stress the IPM electronics.

The IPM is sensitive to power quality. If your supply has frequent spikes or sags, a stabiliser may help prevent H5 recurrence.

  4. After 30 minutes, restart the AC and monitor for 15 minutes.

If H5 clears and does not return after cleaning, overheating was the cause and has been resolved.

  5. If H5 returns despite a clean outdoor unit and stable power supply, call a technician to inspect the IPM board.

An ageing IPM board that overheats under normal load needs professional assessment — it may need replacement.

When to Call a Professional

Call a technician if cleaning the outdoor unit and checking the power supply does not clear H5. IPM board inspection and replacement requires professional skills and safety knowledge. The outdoor unit contains capacitors with dangerous stored charge — do not open it yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an IPM in a Gree inverter AC?

IPM stands for Intelligent Power Module — it is the electronic component that converts mains power into variable-frequency power for the inverter compressor. Without the IPM, the compressor cannot run. The IPM is one of the most sophisticated and expensive components in an inverter AC.

How much does IPM replacement cost?

An IPM board for a Gree inverter AC typically costs $150–$400 for the part alone. Labour adds 1–2 hours of technician time. Get a quote and compare to the cost of a new unit — older units may not be worth the repair cost.

Can a power surge destroy the IPM?

Yes — power surges are a common cause of IPM failure. A quality surge protector or dedicated AC isolator with surge protection is strongly recommended for inverter ACs. Once an IPM is destroyed by a surge, replacement is the only option.
