LE

Gree Split AC

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

LE is a critical error — the compressor drew a dangerous current spike far above normal. This can happen when the compressor seizes, a winding shorts, or voltage goes severely abnormal. Do not restart the unit — get a technician.

Affected Models

  • Gree FAIRY Series
  • Gree LOMO Series
  • Gree U-MATCH Series
  • Gree PULAR Series
  • Gree Inverter Split System

Common Causes

  • Compressor rotor has mechanically seized (locked rotor)
  • Short circuit in the compressor motor windings
  • Mains supply voltage severely abnormal — very high or very low
  • Liquid refrigerant flooded back into the compressor at startup
  • Compressor drive board (IPM) fault causing incorrect drive signal

How to Fix It

  1. Turn off the AC at the remote and immediately switch off the outdoor unit circuit breaker.

This protects the drive board (IPM) from further damage caused by the overcurrent event.

  2. Do not attempt to restart the unit, even after a waiting period.

Unlike a simple temperature protection, LE indicates a potentially catastrophic electrical event inside the compressor.

  3. Check your home supply voltage if you suspect a grid voltage issue.

A voltage meter at your meter box can confirm if the supply is abnormally high or low. If so, contact your electricity provider.

  4. Call a Gree-certified technician and describe the LE code.

The technician will test the compressor winding resistance, refrigerant charge, and drive board before advising on repair options.

  5. Ask the technician about compressor replacement if the unit is out of warranty.

If the compressor windings are shorted, full compressor replacement is usually the only fix.

When to Call a Professional

This is a critical fault requiring immediate professional attention. Do not attempt to restart the unit — a seized compressor or shorted winding is a fire and electrical hazard. A technician must perform full electrical testing before any restart is attempted.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes a Gree LE error code?

The most common cause is a compressor that has mechanically seized or has shorted motor windings. Severely abnormal mains voltage can also trigger it. It is one of the most serious AC error codes.

Can I reset a Gree LE error by cutting the power?

You can cut power to stop the unit, but do not treat it as a reset and restart. The underlying fault that caused the current spike is still present. Restarting risks a fire, a tripped main breaker, or further compressor damage.

Is it worth repairing a Gree AC with an LE error?

It depends on the cause and the age of the unit. If the drive board triggered a false LE due to a board fault, the repair is relatively inexpensive. If the compressor itself has seized or shorted, repair cost may approach the cost of a new unit.
