P6

Gree Split AC

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

P6 means the indoor main board and the outdoor inverter drive board cannot communicate. A damaged or loose control wire is the most common cause. Check the wiring between the indoor and outdoor units before replacing any boards.

Affected Models

  • Gree FAIRY Series
  • Gree LOMO Series
  • Gree U-MATCH Series
  • Gree PULAR Series
  • Gree Inverter Split System

Common Causes

  • Control signal wire between indoor and outdoor units is broken or pinched
  • Connector at either board is loose or corroded
  • Indoor main control board has failed
  • Outdoor inverter drive board has failed
  • Electrical interference or a power surge damaged the communication circuit

How to Fix It

  1. Turn off the AC and the outdoor unit breaker before inspecting any wiring.

Never inspect or touch wiring while power is connected.

  2. Locate the control wire running between the indoor and outdoor units.

This is usually a thin 2–4 core signal wire alongside the power cables in the conduit.

  3. Check both ends for loose or corroded connectors and re-seat them firmly.

Vibration over time can work connectors partially loose, especially on the outdoor board.

  4. Inspect the wire along its run for any visible pinching, cuts, or rodent damage.

A single break in the signal wire is enough to cause continuous P6.

  5. If wiring is intact, restore power and test. If P6 returns, call a technician to test both PCBs.

Board testing confirms whether the indoor board, outdoor board, or both need replacement.

When to Call a Professional

Call a technician if the wiring appears intact but P6 persists. Board-level diagnosis requires a multimeter and knowledge of the communication protocol. Replacing either PCB is a straightforward swap but both boards can be expensive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a power surge cause a Gree P6 error?

Yes. A power surge can damage the communication circuit on one or both boards. If P6 appeared right after a storm or power event, board damage is a likely cause.

How do I find the control wire on my Gree split system?

Follow the insulated pipe and cable bundle from your indoor unit to your outdoor unit. The control wire is inside this bundle — usually labelled or colour-coded separately from the power wires.

Is the P6 error expensive to fix?

If it is just a broken wire, the repair is inexpensive. If one of the PCBs has failed, the cost depends on which board — outdoor drive boards tend to be more expensive than indoor main boards.
