P8

Gree Split AC

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

P8 means the PFC (Power Factor Correction) circuit in the outdoor unit has overheated. Dirty outdoor units with blocked airflow are the most common cause. Cleaning the outdoor coil often resolves this — a failing PFC component needs a technician.

Affected Models

  • Gree FAIRY Series
  • Gree LOMO Series
  • Gree U-MATCH Series
  • Gree PULAR Series
  • Gree Inverter Split System

Common Causes

  • Outdoor unit coil is dirty and blocking airflow needed to cool the PFC circuit
  • High ambient temperature exceeding the outdoor unit rated range
  • PFC component on the outdoor PCB is starting to fail
  • Inadequate clearance around the outdoor unit causing heat buildup
  • PFC cooling heatsink has become coated in dust or debris

How to Fix It

  1. Turn off the AC and let the outdoor unit cool for 30 minutes.

P8 is a thermal protection — the PFC must cool down before the unit will restart.

  2. Clean the outdoor coil fins with a gentle spray of water.

Blocked coil fins reduce the airflow that cools both the refrigerant and the electrical components including the PFC.

  3. Check that the outdoor unit has at least 50 cm of clear space on the air outlet side.

Fences, walls, or stored items blocking the fan outlet cause heat to recirculate and trigger P8.

  4. Restart the unit and monitor for recurrence.

If P8 only occurs on extreme hot days after cleaning, improved outdoor unit placement may be the solution.

  5. If P8 returns after cleaning and on normal temperature days, call a technician.

A failing PFC inductor or capacitor will cause P8 regardless of ambient temperature or airflow.

When to Call a Professional

Call a technician if cleaning the outdoor unit and improving airflow does not resolve P8. A failing PFC component needs board-level diagnosis. The PFC circuit operates at mains voltage and above — do not open the electrical compartment yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does PFC stand for in a Gree AC?

PFC stands for Power Factor Correction. It is a circuit in the outdoor unit that improves how efficiently the inverter draws power from the mains. When it overheats, the unit shuts down to prevent damage.

My Gree shows P8 only in summer — is that normal?

It can happen in very high ambient temperatures, especially if the outdoor unit is in direct sun or a confined space. Cleaning the outdoor coil and improving airflow around the outdoor unit usually prevents it.

Can I run my Gree AC after a P8 error?

You can restart it after the outdoor unit has cooled — usually 30 minutes. If P8 returns quickly, do not keep restarting. Repeated thermal stress on the PFC component shortens its life.
