F2

TCL Air Conditioner

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

F2 on a TCL air conditioner means the outdoor coil temperature sensor (T3 sensor) is not sending a valid reading. The unit has paused to protect the compressor. Check that the sensor is connected and not visibly damaged.

Affected Models

  • TCL TAC-09CSA/XA
  • TCL TAC-12CSA/XA
  • TCL TAC-18CSA/XA
  • TCL split AC units

Common Causes

  • Disconnected or corroded sensor connector on the outdoor unit circuit board
  • Damaged sensor probe — bent, kinked, or cracked from physical contact
  • Sensor thermistor resistance out of range due to age or heat stress
  • Moisture ingress into the outdoor unit affecting the sensor connection

How to Fix It

  1. Reset the unit at the circuit breaker.

Switch off the breaker for 5 minutes. Turn it back on and see if F2 clears. A temporary contact issue may resolve with a full power reset.

  2. Inspect the outdoor unit sensor connector.

Switch off mains power to the outdoor unit. Open the outdoor casing and locate the coil sensor — a small thermistor clipped onto the refrigerant pipe. Check that its wire connector is pushed firmly into the board socket and shows no rust or bent pins.

  3. Clean any corroded connector pins.

If the connector pins are green or white with corrosion, spray them lightly with electrical contact cleaner, leave to dry for 5 minutes, and reconnect. Moisture ingress is a common cause of F2 in humid environments.

  4. Test the sensor resistance with a multimeter.

Disconnect the sensor and measure across its two leads. At 25°C (77°F), most coil sensors read approximately 10,000 ohms (10 kΩ). An open circuit (OL) or a reading far outside this range confirms the sensor has failed and must be replaced.

When to Call a Professional

If resetting and checking the connector do not resolve F2, the sensor must be tested with a multimeter and replaced. This requires opening the outdoor unit — contact a qualified HVAC technician.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still run the AC with F2 showing?

The unit may attempt to operate, but without a working outdoor coil sensor it cannot protect itself from overheating or icing. It is best to resolve F2 promptly to avoid compressor damage.

Is F2 the same as E2 on TCL units?

No. E2 is the indoor coil sensor (evaporator) fault. F2 is the outdoor coil sensor fault — a different physical component located in the outdoor unit.
