EH

TCL Split AC

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

EH means the thermal protection switch on top of the compressor has tripped. This is a safety shutdown triggered when the compressor body gets dangerously hot. Do not override or bypass this protection — it is preventing serious damage.

Affected Models

  • TCL TAC-09CHSD/XA21
  • TCL TAC-12CHSD/XA21
  • TCL TAC-18CHSD/XA21
  • TCL TAC-24CHSD/XA21
  • TCL Inverter Split System

Common Causes

  • Dirty outdoor condenser coil trapping heat around the compressor
  • Inadequate ventilation around the outdoor unit
  • Low refrigerant causing the compressor to overwork and overheat
  • Outdoor fan motor not running properly — see EF
  • Compressor nearing end of life and running inefficiently

How to Fix It

  1. Switch off the AC immediately and let the outdoor unit cool for at least 1 hour.

The compressor top switch resets automatically once the temperature drops to a safe level.

  2. While waiting, check the outdoor unit for blocked airflow on all sides.

Objects, fences, or overgrown plants within 30 cm of the outdoor unit restrict heat dissipation.

  3. Check the outdoor condenser coil — if it is caked with dirt, have it professionally cleaned.

A dirty coil is the most common cause of compressor overheating in residential split systems.

  4. Confirm the outdoor fan is running when the unit is on — listen for fan noise.

If the fan is not spinning, you likely also have an EF fault. Fix the fan first.

  5. After the unit has cooled, restart the AC and monitor closely for the first 30 minutes.

If EH returns quickly, the cause is still present and a technician is needed.

  6. If EH recurs, have a technician check refrigerant levels and compressor health.

Low refrigerant or a worn compressor requires professional service — neither is a DIY fix.

When to Call a Professional

EH always warrants a technician visit if it occurs more than once. Low refrigerant and a failing compressor require professional diagnosis and equipment. Do not attempt to reset the thermal switch manually — let it cool and reset naturally.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the thermal protection switch on top of the compressor?

It is a small bimetallic switch bolted to the top of the compressor housing. When the compressor body temperature exceeds its rated limit, the switch opens and cuts power. This prevents the compressor windings from burning out — it is a last-resort safety device.

Will EH clear by itself on a TCL split AC?

Yes — if you switch off the unit and let the compressor cool down, EH will reset on its own. However, if the underlying cause (dirty coil, poor airflow, low refrigerant) is not fixed, EH will return. Address the root cause to prevent repeated trips.

Can high outdoor ambient temperature cause EH on a TCL AC?

Extreme summer heat can push compressor temperatures close to the trip threshold. If the outdoor unit is also dirty or poorly ventilated, this combination can trigger EH. Keeping the outdoor unit clean and shaded where possible reduces the risk.
