W1

Universal HVAC System

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

The W1 error means water has filled up the drain pan under your indoor unit. A small float switch triggered to stop the system before water damages your ceiling. The drain line is likely clogged and needs to be cleared.

Affected Models

  • Central air conditioners
  • Mini-split air handlers
  • Ceiling cassette units
  • Heat pumps with indoor air handlers

Common Causes

  • Condensate drain line is clogged with algae, mold, or debris
  • Condensate drain pan is cracked or not draining properly
  • Float switch is stuck in the up position even when the pan is empty
  • High humidity causing more condensation than the drain can handle
  • Condensate pump has failed and water has nowhere to go

How to Fix It

  1. Turn off the HVAC system at the thermostat immediately.

Continuing to run the unit when the pan is full will overflow water into your ceiling or walls.

  2. Find the indoor air handler unit — usually in a closet, attic, or basement.

The drain pan sits underneath it. Check if it actually has standing water in it.

  3. Use a wet/dry vacuum to suck out the water from the drain pan.

This gives you room to work and prevents overflow while you clear the blockage.

  4. Find the condensate drain line and flush it with warm water or diluted white vinegar.

Pour a cup of distilled white vinegar into the drain line access port to break up algae buildup. Wait 30 minutes, then flush with water.

  5. Restart the system and monitor for 30 minutes to ensure water is draining normally.

If the W1 error returns quickly, the clog is deeper in the line and a technician with a wet/dry vacuum flush kit is needed.

When to Call a Professional

If flushing the drain line does not clear the error, call a technician. A cracked drain pan or failed pump needs professional repair to prevent water damage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my AC produce so much water?

Air conditioners remove humidity from the air as they cool your home. That moisture collects as water and drips into the drain pan — this is completely normal.

How often should I clean the condensate drain line?

Pour a cup of white vinegar down the drain line every 1–3 months during cooling season. This prevents algae from building up and causing blockages.

Can a W1 error cause water damage to my home?

Yes — if the pan overflows, water can damage your ceiling, walls, and floor. The W1 error and float switch exist specifically to shut the system down before that happens.
