E1

Voltas Split AC

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

E1 on a Voltas AC means the indoor and outdoor units cannot communicate with each other. Both units exchange control signals continuously through a communication wire — when this connection is broken or disrupted, E1 appears and the system stops. This is commonly caused by a wiring fault, a power failure at the outdoor unit, or a PCB fault.

Affected Models

  • Voltas Inverter Split AC (all capacities)
  • Voltas 3 Star Inverter
  • Voltas 5 Star Inverter
  • Voltas Adjustable Inverter
  • Voltas SAC series

Common Causes

  • Communication wire between indoor and outdoor unit broken or disconnected
  • Outdoor unit not receiving power — tripped breaker or blown fuse on the outdoor circuit
  • Indoor PCB not transmitting the communication signal correctly
  • Outdoor PCB not responding to the communication signal
  • Power fluctuation or brownout disrupting the communication link

How to Fix It

  1. Check whether the outdoor unit has power — look for indicator lights or listen for any sound from the unit.

A completely silent outdoor unit with no lights has lost power. Check the dedicated outdoor unit circuit breaker in your electrical distribution board.

  2. Switch off power at the circuit breaker for 5 minutes, then restore and restart.

A power reset re-establishes communication between both units. If E1 clears and does not return, it was a transient communication disruption.

  3. Inspect the communication cable at both the indoor and outdoor units.

The communication cable terminals are visible on both PCBs. Check that the cable is firmly connected at both ends and that there is no visible damage.

  4. If E1 persists, call Voltas service — communication wiring or PCB fault needs professional diagnosis.

When to Call a Professional

E1 requires a technician to inspect the communication wiring and test both PCBs. Voltas customer care: 1800-209-2000. Do not attempt to re-route or splice the communication cable — incorrect connections damage both PCBs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a power cut cause Voltas E1?

Yes — sudden power cuts often cause E1 when power is restored, as the two units may not restart in sync. Switch off the circuit breaker, wait 5 minutes, then restore power to allow a clean restart. If E1 appears regularly without power cuts, the communication cable or a PCB needs inspection.
