E2

Voltas Split AC

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

E2 on a Voltas AC means the anti-freeze protection has activated — the indoor evaporator coil is too cold and the system has shut down to prevent ice formation. This is a protective response, not always a component failure. The most common causes are a blocked air filter, a room that is already very cold, or a refrigerant issue.

Affected Models

  • Voltas Inverter Split AC (all capacities)
  • Voltas 3 Star Inverter
  • Voltas 5 Star Inverter
  • Voltas Adjustable Inverter
  • Voltas SAC series

Common Causes

  • Air filter blocked — reduced airflow causes the coil to over-cool and approach freezing
  • Set temperature too low in a cool room — coil reaches near-freezing before the room temperature triggers shut-off
  • Fan speed set too low — insufficient air movement over the coil
  • Refrigerant overcharged — excess refrigerant causes abnormally low coil temperatures
  • Indoor coil thermistor fault — misreading the coil temperature and triggering protection early

How to Fix It

  1. Clean the air filter immediately — this resolves E2 in the majority of cases.

Remove, wash, dry, and reinstall the filter. A clogged filter is the most common cause of anti-freeze protection triggering.

  2. Switch the AC off for 20 minutes to allow the coil to defrost.

Do not restart immediately — if the coil has begun to freeze, running the fan will just blow cold air without cooling and may trigger E2 again.

  3. Restart and set the temperature to 24–26 degrees C and fan speed to medium or high.

A very low set temperature (18–20 degrees C) combined with low fan speed is a common cause of E2 in already-cool rooms.

  4. If E2 returns despite a clean filter and normal settings, call Voltas service.

A refrigerant overcharge or a faulty indoor coil thermistor will cause persistent E2 regardless of filter or setting adjustments.

When to Call a Professional

If cleaning the filter and adjusting settings does not resolve E2, call Voltas service. A refrigerant overcharge or thermistor fault requires a qualified technician. Voltas: 1800-209-2000.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Voltas E2 always serious?

No — in most cases E2 is simply the AC protecting itself from a blocked filter or too-aggressive cooling settings. Clean the filter, let the coil defrost, and restart with sensible settings. Only if E2 returns repeatedly after these steps does it indicate a component fault needing a technician.
