HC
Voltas Split AC
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
HC on a Voltas AC means the outdoor unit has triggered its high current or Power Factor Correction (PFC) protection. Voltas inverter ACs stop the compressor immediately when HC appears to prevent damage to the inverter drive and compressor. This code nearly always requires a technician — do not keep restarting the unit.
Affected Models
- Voltas 1.5 Ton Inverter Split AC
- Voltas 1 Ton Inverter Split AC
- Voltas 2 Ton Inverter Split AC
- Voltas Adjustable Inverter Series
- Voltas Vertis Plus Series
Common Causes
- PFC module fault on the outdoor PCB — the most common component failure behind HC on Voltas inverter models
- Compressor winding fault — drawing abnormal current due to internal degradation
- Mains power supply quality issue — voltage spikes or heavy fluctuations overwhelming the PFC correction range
- Outdoor unit PCB (inverter board) partially failed — current sensing circuit giving wrong readings
- Refrigerant system issue — either overcharge or blockage forcing high compressor current
- Capacitor on the outdoor power board has degraded — reducing PFC efficiency
How to Fix It
-
Turn off the AC at the remote and switch off the circuit breaker.
Fully de-energise the outdoor unit. Do not try to reset and restart multiple times — this can cause further damage to the inverter PCB.
-
Check that the outdoor unit has clear airflow on all sides.
Voltas recommends at least 30 cm clearance on the sides and 60 cm at the top and front of the outdoor unit. A blocked unit overheats and pulls excess current.
-
Check whether HC appeared during a thunderstorm or power cut.
Voltage spikes during storms commonly trigger HC on inverter ACs. If the power supply is now stable, try one restart. If HC returns, call a technician.
-
Call Voltas customer care or a Voltas-authorised service centre.
Voltas has a dense service network in India. A technician will bring test equipment including a clamp meter and oscilloscope to diagnose whether the PFC circuit or compressor is the root cause.
When to Call a Professional
HC on Voltas requires a licensed technician. Voltas customer care: 1800-209-1618 (toll free). Voltas has a wide service network across India — a technician visit is typically arranged within 24-48 hours.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Voltas HC repairable or do I need a new AC?
In the majority of cases, HC on Voltas is repairable. The most common fix is replacing a faulty capacitor or PFC component on the outdoor PCB — a relatively inexpensive part. Full outdoor PCB replacement is needed less often. Compressor failure behind HC is the most expensive scenario, but even this is typically repaired rather than requiring a full AC replacement, especially if the indoor unit is fine.
How long has Voltas been making inverter ACs?
Voltas introduced inverter split ACs to the Indian market around 2013-2014. Earlier models (pre-2016) used simpler inverter technology with less sophisticated PFC modules, which can be more prone to HC faults after several years of use. Newer Voltas models (2020 onwards) use more robust PCB designs.
