BIOS Recovery Loop

Acer Laptop

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

An Acer laptop stuck in BIOS recovery typically has corrupted BIOS firmware or a battery/CMOS issue. Use Acer's keyboard shortcut to trigger a manual BIOS recovery from a USB flash drive.

Affected Models

  • Acer Aspire
  • Acer Swift
  • Acer Predator
  • Acer Nitro
  • Acer TravelMate

Common Causes

  • Corrupted BIOS firmware after a failed update
  • Power loss during a BIOS update
  • Drained CMOS battery causing repeated BIOS resets
  • Failed motherboard component preventing BIOS from completing initialization

How to Fix It

  1. Drain residual power.

Unplug the laptop and remove the battery if removable. Hold the power button for 30 seconds to drain residual power. Reconnect and try again — sometimes this clears a stuck recovery state.

  2. Prepare a BIOS recovery USB.

On another computer, download the BIOS file for your Acer laptop model from Acer support. Format a USB flash drive as FAT32 and copy the BIOS file (renamed as required by your model — Acer's instructions specify the filename).

  3. Trigger BIOS recovery.

Insert the USB into the laptop. For most Acer models, hold Fn + Esc (or Fn + R, depending on model) while pressing the power button. The system will detect and apply the BIOS file from the USB.

  4. Replace the CMOS battery.

If the recovery loop is caused by a drained CMOS battery, BIOS settings reset every boot. Replace the small CR2032 battery on the motherboard (requires opening the laptop).

When to Call a Professional

If keyboard-triggered BIOS recovery does not work, a technician with a SPI flash programmer can re-flash the BIOS chip directly. This is a board-level repair.
