Black Screen After Login

Asus Laptop

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

A black screen after login on an Asus laptop is usually a graphics driver issue or a Windows shell that has not loaded. Try Ctrl + Alt + Delete, then sign out and back in. If that fails, restart Explorer or boot into Safe Mode.

Affected Models

  • Asus ROG
  • Asus TUF Gaming
  • Asus VivoBook
  • Asus ZenBook
  • Asus ExpertBook

Common Causes

  • Failed graphics driver after a Windows update
  • Windows Explorer (the desktop shell) has crashed or not loaded
  • MUX switch or Optimus configuration issue (ROG and TUF models)
  • Display sent to a disconnected external monitor
  • Corrupted user profile

How to Fix It

  1. Wake the screen with Ctrl + Alt + Delete.

If the desktop shell has frozen, Ctrl + Alt + Delete brings up the security screen. From there, sign out and back in. This often loads the desktop normally.

  2. Restart Windows Explorer.

After Ctrl + Alt + Delete, open Task Manager, find Windows Explorer in the Processes list, right-click it, and select Restart. This re-launches the desktop shell without a full reboot.

  3. Check the display output.

Press Windows + P and select PC screen only. If the display had been routed to an external monitor that is no longer connected, this restores it to the laptop screen.

  4. Boot into Safe Mode and reinstall the graphics driver.

Boot into Safe Mode (Shift + Restart > Troubleshoot > Advanced > Startup Settings > 4). Uninstall the graphics driver in Device Manager, reboot, and let Windows install a fresh driver. Then update via MyAsus or NVIDIA's website.

When to Call a Professional

If safe mode and driver reinstallation do not restore the desktop, a technician can repair Windows or migrate the user profile to resolve persistent black screen issues.
