Caps Lock Blink Codes

HP Laptop

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

HP laptops use caps lock or num lock blink codes to indicate POST errors when there is no display. Count the blinks — each pattern points to a specific hardware fault (1 = CPU, 2 = BIOS, 3 = memory, 5 = video, 6 = embedded controller).

Affected Models

  • HP Pavilion
  • HP EliteBook
  • HP ProBook
  • HP Envy
  • HP ZBook
  • HP Spectre

Common Causes

  • 1 blink: CPU not functioning or seated correctly
  • 2 blinks: BIOS corruption or BIOS update failure
  • 3 blinks: memory module not detected or failing
  • 4 blinks: graphics chip failure
  • 5 blinks: video subsystem failure
  • 6 blinks: embedded controller fault
  • 7 blinks: motherboard failure

How to Fix It

  1. Count the blinks carefully.

Watch the caps lock LED. There is a long pause between repeats. Count the blinks in one cycle — that is the error code (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7).

  2. Try memory reseating for 3 blinks.

If you see 3 blinks (memory error), unplug the laptop, remove the bottom panel, and reseat the RAM module(s). Clean the contacts gently with a dry cloth. Try one stick at a time if you have multiple.

  3. Try BIOS recovery for 2 blinks.

Hold Windows + B while pressing the power button. This triggers HP's BIOS recovery from a USB flash drive (download HP's BIOS recovery file for your model first).

  4. Contact HP service for other blink counts.

1, 4, 5, 6, or 7 blinks indicate failures of the CPU, graphics, video, EC, or motherboard. These are not user-repairable. Contact HP support — if your laptop is in warranty, repair or replacement is covered.

When to Call a Professional

Most HP blink codes indicate hardware failures that require board-level repair. The exception is memory (3 blinks), which is often user-fixable by reseating the RAM module.
