Stuck on Surface Logo

Microsoft Surface Laptop

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

A Surface stuck on the Surface logo has frozen during boot. Force a shutdown, then boot into Windows Recovery to run Startup Repair. If that fails, you may need to reset Windows from a USB recovery image.

Affected Models

  • Surface Laptop
  • Surface Pro
  • Surface Book
  • Surface Go
  • Surface Laptop Studio

Common Causes

  • Corrupted Windows boot files
  • Failed Windows update during installation
  • Pending firmware update that did not complete
  • Incompatible driver causing boot freeze
  • Failing storage with read errors during boot

How to Fix It

  1. Force shutdown with the power button.

Hold the power button for 30 seconds. The device should power off completely. Press power again to retry — sometimes a single freeze does not repeat.

  2. Boot into Windows Recovery.

Force shutdown three times in a row at the Surface logo. On the third boot, Windows automatically enters Recovery Mode. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced > Startup Repair.

  3. Try Startup Repair.

Startup Repair attempts to fix boot issues automatically. It can take 15–30 minutes. If it fails, try System Restore to roll back to a known-good restore point.

  4. Reset Windows from Recovery.

From Windows Recovery, select Reset this PC. Choose Keep my files if you want to preserve user data. This reinstalls Windows while preserving your documents (but apps will need to be reinstalled).

  5. Use a Surface USB recovery image.

If recovery options fail, download the Surface recovery image from Microsoft's site for your specific Surface model. Create a USB recovery drive on another PC and boot from it to perform a full reinstall.

When to Call a Professional

If startup repair and a reset both fail, a technician or Microsoft service can perform a low-level recovery. Surface devices may also be eligible for repair or replacement under warranty.
