Won't Turn On
Microsoft Surface Laptop
Severity: CriticalWhat Does This Error Mean?
A Surface that will not turn on usually needs a forced shutdown or a deep two-button reset. Hold the power button for 30 seconds, then try the Volume Up + Power 15-second reset for a deeper recovery.
Affected Models
- Surface Laptop
- Surface Pro
- Surface Book
- Surface Go
- Surface Studio
- Surface Laptop Studio
Common Causes
- Stuck firmware state preventing power-on
- Dead battery combined with disconnected charger
- Failed Surface Connect or USB-C charging port
- Firmware corruption requiring a reset
- Failed motherboard component
How to Fix It
-
Try a 30-second forced shutdown.
Press and hold the power button for 30 full seconds, even if the screen stays black. Release, then press power normally. This clears most stuck firmware states.
-
Try the two-button forced shutdown (Surface Pro, Book).
Press and hold the power button AND the Volume Up button together for 15 seconds. Ignore any logo or shutdown animation that appears. Release after 15 seconds, wait 10 seconds, then press power.
-
Charge for at least an hour.
Connect the original Surface charger and leave it for at least 1 hour. The charging LED should light up. If the LED is off, try a different USB-C or Surface Connect charger.
-
Try the Volume Down recovery (Surface).
If the Surface still does not respond, try holding Volume Down + Power for 30 seconds. This triggers a deeper firmware recovery. Release after 30 seconds and try to power on normally.
When to Call a Professional
If both the 30-second and the two-button reset fail, the device requires Microsoft Surface service. Microsoft typically offers replacement rather than repair on consumer Surfaces.
