Cuff Error / Unable to Inflate

Various Blood Pressure Monitor

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

A cuff error means the monitor cannot inflate the cuff to the required pressure. The cuff may have an air leak, the tube may be kinked, or the connection is loose. Check all connections and look for holes in the cuff.

Affected Models

  • Omron Series 5/7/10
  • Withings BPM Connect
  • Braun ExactFit
  • Most home blood pressure monitors

Common Causes

  • Air hose not connected to the monitor
  • Hole or tear in the cuff bladder
  • Kink in the air tube
  • Cuff wrapped too loosely — cannot build pressure
  • Pump motor failing

How to Fix It

  1. Check that the air hose is firmly connected.

Push the connector into the monitor until it clicks. A loose connection causes air leaks.

  2. Check the cuff for holes or tears.

Inflate the cuff by itself (not on your arm) and feel for air escaping. Replace the cuff if it leaks.

  3. Straighten the air tube.

A kinked tube prevents air from reaching the cuff.

  4. Wrap the cuff more snugly.

A cuff that is too loose cannot build pressure. Tighten until snug — one finger should fit between cuff and arm.
