Error Reading / ERR / E1
Various Blood Pressure Monitor
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
An error reading on a blood pressure monitor usually means the cuff could not detect your pulse properly. The cuff may be positioned wrong, too loose, or you moved during the measurement. Sit still, position the cuff at heart level, and try again.
Affected Models
- Omron Series 5/7/10
- Withings BPM Connect
- iHealth
- Braun ExactFit
- Most home blood pressure monitors
Common Causes
- Cuff not positioned correctly on the arm
- Cuff too loose or too tight
- Movement during measurement
- Cuff too small or too large for the arm
- Irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) confusing the sensor
- Batteries low
How to Fix It
-
Sit quietly for 5 minutes before measuring.
Rest reduces heart rate variability, which makes readings more accurate.
-
Position the cuff on bare skin, 1 inch above the elbow.
The arrow or tubing mark should align with the brachial artery (inside of the arm). Do not place over clothing.
-
Make sure the cuff is snug but not tight.
You should be able to fit one finger between the cuff and your arm. Too loose = error. Too tight = inaccurate reading.
-
Keep your arm at heart level and do not move.
Rest your arm on a table. Do not talk, move, or cross your legs during the reading.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my cuff is the right size?
Measure the circumference of your upper arm. Standard cuff: 22-32cm. Large cuff: 32-42cm. A wrong-size cuff gives inaccurate readings.
Can arrhythmia cause errors?
Yes. Irregular heartbeats make it harder for the monitor to detect the pulse signal. Some monitors (Omron) have arrhythmia detection and will note it alongside the reading.
