Device Not Starting
CPAP CPAP Machine
Severity: CriticalWhat Does This Error Mean?
A CPAP machine that will not start is most often caused by a power supply problem, a blocked or disconnected air filter, or a water chamber issue triggering a protection fault. Check the power connection and the air filter first.
Affected Models
- ResMed AirSense 10
- ResMed AirSense 11
- Philips DreamStation 2
- Philips DreamStation Go
- DeVilbiss IntelliPAP
Common Causes
- Power cord loose or power adapter failed
- Air filter blocked — some machines will not start without adequate airflow
- Water chamber incorrectly seated or empty where the machine requires it
- Device error code preventing startup — check the display for an error
- Machine in travel mode with a different power setting for the voltage
- Internal fault requiring a service reset
How to Fix It
-
Check the power connection.
Disconnect and firmly reconnect both ends of the power cord — at the machine and at the wall. Try a different outlet to rule out the socket. CPAP power adapters can fail silently — if you have the option, try a different adapter.
-
Check and clean the air filter.
Locate the grey foam filter on the back or side of the machine and remove it. If it is grey or brown with dust, rinse it under cold water, squeeze gently, and allow it to dry completely before reinstalling. A severely blocked filter prevents adequate airflow, and some machines refuse to start as a protection measure.
-
Check the water chamber on humidifier models.
On ResMed AirSense and Philips DreamStation models, the water chamber must be correctly seated. Remove and reseat the chamber. Some machines will not start if the chamber is improperly installed or cracked. If you do not use the humidifier, the chamber can often be removed entirely — check your manual.
-
Read any error code on the display.
Most CPAP machines display an error code if they detect a fault. Note the exact code shown and search this site for your brand and error code for a specific fix. Common startup-preventing errors: ResMed Error 1000 (power supply), ResMed Error 1100 (motor fault).
-
Perform a clinical reset if the machine is locked.
Some CPAP machines can be reset to factory defaults through a key sequence. This process varies by model — consult your machine's clinical manual or contact your equipment provider. Do not adjust therapy pressure settings without medical supervision.
Frequently Asked Questions
My CPAP makes a click sound when I press start but does not run — what does that mean?
A click with no motor startup usually means the machine's motor protection has tripped, a blocked filter is preventing startup, or the motor itself has failed. Check the filter first. If the filter is clean and the machine still does not start after the click, contact your equipment provider for service.
Is it safe to sleep without CPAP while waiting for a repair?
This depends on the severity of your sleep apnea — consult your doctor if you are unsure. For mild apnea, occasional nights without CPAP are generally safe. For severe apnea (AHI above 30), unmanaged nights increase cardiovascular risk. Many equipment providers offer loaner machines while yours is being repaired.
