Stuck in Cooling
Lumenis LightSheer Diode Laser
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
A Lumenis LightSheer that is stuck in cooling mode — running the cooling system continuously but never reaching the ready state — usually means the diode output power has dropped below the threshold needed to satisfy the system's internal calibration check. This is typically caused by diode degradation, an incorrect energy calibration, or a cooling system that is not reaching its target temperature.
Affected Models
- Lumenis LightSheer DUET
- Lumenis LightSheer ET
- Lumenis LightSheer Infinity
- Lumenis LightSheer DESIRE
- Lumenis LightSheer HS
Common Causes
- Diode module degraded — output power too low to pass the calibration test and reach ready state
- Cooling system not reaching the target temperature — cooling below spec delays or prevents ready state
- Handpiece contact with the applicator window causing energy loss at calibration
- Power calibration file corrupted — system is checking against incorrect reference values
- Thermal sensor in the handpiece or diode module giving incorrect readings
How to Fix It
-
Allow the device a full warm-up period of at least 15–20 minutes.
On a cold start, the LightSheer cooling system must bring the diode mount to exactly the right temperature before calibration can pass. In a cold room or on a cold morning, this can take longer than usual. If the device reaches ready state after a longer warm-up, the room is too cold for normal startup.
-
Check that the handpiece applicator window is clean.
Gel residue or debris on the sapphire contact window can scatter light during the internal calibration pulse, causing the system to read insufficient output power. Clean the applicator window with the appropriate Lumenis cleaning wipe and retry.
-
Power cycle the device and retry.
If the device has been running in cooling mode for more than 20 minutes without reaching ready state, power it off fully, wait 5 minutes, and restart. Occasionally a software glitch in the calibration loop requires a full restart to clear.
-
If the device still does not reach ready state after a clean window and full restart, call Lumenis service.
Persistent stuck-in-cooling is a strong indicator of diode output degradation. A Lumenis engineer will measure actual diode output with a calibrated power meter and determine whether the diodes need replacement.
When to Call a Professional
Stuck in cooling mode almost always requires a Lumenis service engineer. Diode output testing and calibration adjustment require specialist equipment. Do not continue running the device in a loop hoping it will eventually reach ready state — this adds unnecessary hours to the diode module.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does stuck in cooling mode mean my LightSheer diodes need replacement?
It is the most common cause — diode modules lose output efficiency over their lifespan. However, a dirty applicator window, corrupted calibration file, or cooling issue can produce the same symptom. A Lumenis engineer will measure actual diode output before recommending replacement.
How much does LightSheer diode replacement cost?
Diode module replacement is one of the more significant laser repair costs. Prices vary by model and region. Get a written quote from a Lumenis authorised service provider before approving the repair. Compare the repair cost against the device's age and remaining useful life.
