Low Signal / No Reading

Various Pulse Oximeter

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Low Signal means the pulse oximeter cannot detect your pulse through your finger. Cold fingers, dark nail polish, movement, or poor finger placement are common causes. Warm your hands and place your finger fully in the sensor.

Affected Models

  • Zacurate 500BL
  • Innovo Deluxe
  • Masimo MightySat
  • Most fingertip pulse oximeters

Common Causes

  • Cold fingers — poor blood circulation
  • Dark or thick nail polish blocking the light sensor
  • Finger not fully inserted into the device
  • Movement during reading
  • Batteries low
  • Artificial nails blocking the sensor

How to Fix It

  1. Warm your hands before measuring.

Rub hands together or run warm water over them. Cold fingers have reduced blood flow, making readings difficult.

  2. Remove nail polish or acrylic nails.

Dark colours (black, blue, red) block the light sensor. Clear polish is usually fine.

  3. Insert your finger fully — the tip should touch the end of the device.

The sensor needs to see through the fingertip. Partially inserted fingers give bad readings.

  4. Stay still during the reading.

Movement creates signal noise. Sit still for 10-15 seconds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which finger gives the best reading?

The middle finger or index finger on your dominant hand typically gives the best signal. Avoid the thumb (too thick) and pinky (too thin).

Can a pulse oximeter be wrong?

Yes. Home pulse oximeters have a ±2% accuracy margin. Cold fingers, poor circulation, and movement can cause readings to be off by more.
