Door Switch Fault
Sharp Microwave
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
A Sharp microwave will not start if the door switch has failed — the microwave requires all switches to confirm the door is closed before allowing the magnetron to run. Test the switches and replace any that fail.
Affected Models
- Sharp Carousel Microwave
- Sharp R-Series Microwave
- Sharp Over-the-Range Microwave
- Sharp Countertop Microwave
Common Causes
- Failed primary or secondary door interlock switch
- Broken door latch hook not activating the switch
- Worn door switch mechanism from repeated use
- Blown main fuse caused by a failed door switch
How to Fix It
-
Inspect the door latch hooks.
Open and close the door and watch the plastic latch hooks (typically two at the top and one at the bottom). If a hook is broken or does not move freely, it is not pressing the door switch, and the microwave will not start.
-
Test the door switches with a multimeter.
Unplug the microwave and remove the outer cabinet (usually several screws on the back and sides). Locate the door switch assembly — typically two or three switches near the door latch. Test each switch for continuity when the actuator is pressed. Replace any switch that does not change state.
-
Check and replace the main fuse if blown.
A failed door switch often blows the main ceramic fuse. Test the fuse for continuity. If blown, replace both the fuse AND the faulty door switch — replacing only the fuse will cause it to blow again immediately.
When to Call a Professional
Testing and replacing door switches is a DIY-feasible repair on most Sharp microwaves. However, if the main fuse blew due to a faulty switch, always replace the switch first or the new fuse will blow again immediately.
