Throttle Fault

BMW Motorrad Motorcycle

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

A BMW throttle fault means the ride-by-wire system has detected an inconsistency between the throttle grip sensor and the throttle body actuator. The bike enters limp mode with reduced power. A scan tool reads the specific code.

Affected Models

  • BMW R 1250 GS
  • BMW R 1300 GS
  • BMW S 1000 RR
  • BMW S 1000 XR
  • BMW R 1250 RT
  • BMW K 1600

Common Causes

  • Throttle position sensor fault
  • Damaged throttle grip sensor (twist grip electronics)
  • Throttle body actuator failure
  • Wiring damage between grip and ECU
  • Low battery voltage causing intermittent sensor errors

How to Fix It

  1. Stop riding safely.

If a throttle fault is active, the bike is limited in power and may behave unpredictably. Pull over safely and stop the engine. Restart — sometimes a single restart clears a transient fault.

  2. Check the battery and connections.

Low battery voltage during start can cause throttle faults to be falsely stored. Verify battery voltage is over 12.4V at rest and clean both battery terminals.

  3. Inspect the throttle harness.

Look at the wiring from the right handlebar grip down to the headstock area. Damage at the steering stops (where the harness flexes during turns) is common on older bikes.

  4. Diagnose with GS-911 or at a BMW dealer.

A scan tool reads the specific throttle fault code (e.g. potentiometer 1 vs 2 deviation, actuator overcurrent). This tells you whether the grip, the throttle body, or the wiring is at fault.

When to Call a Professional

Throttle faults usually require a GS-911 or BMW dealer for diagnosis. The throttle system is safety-critical and proper testing of all sensor signals is essential before riding under power.
