Immobilizer Error
Triumph Motorcycle
Severity: CriticalWhat Does This Error Mean?
A Triumph immobilizer error means the ECU cannot read the key transponder. Most cases are caused by interference from another transponder or RFID tag on the keyring, or a damaged transponder chip.
Affected Models
- Triumph Tiger 900
- Triumph Tiger 1200
- Triumph Street Triple
- Triumph Speed Triple
- Triumph Bonneville
- Triumph Trident
- Triumph Rocket 3
Common Causes
- Interference from another transponder, key, or RFID tag on the keyring
- Damaged or weak key transponder chip
- Faulty immobilizer antenna ring around the ignition
- Key held too far from the antenna
- Failed ECU after a battery issue or fault
How to Fix It
-
Use only the key on the keyring.
Remove all other keys, RFID tags, work passes, and electronic items. Multiple transponders nearby confuse the antenna. Hold only the Triumph key over the ignition.
-
Try a spare key.
If you have a second Triumph key, test it. If the spare works, the original key transponder has failed and needs replacement coding.
-
Disconnect and reconnect the battery.
A 10-minute battery disconnect can sometimes reset transient immobilizer faults. Reconnect and try again — the bike may re-read the key correctly.
-
Have keys recoded at a Triumph dealer.
If neither key is recognised, the dealer can recode keys to the bike using their diagnostic tool. Provide proof of ownership. The dealer typically requires both keys (or as many as you have) at the recoding session.
When to Call a Professional
If neither key works after isolating other transponders and a battery disconnect did not help, the keys need to be recoded. A Triumph dealer or specialist with diagnostic tool access can do this.
