Address Not Found
Garmin GPS Navigation Device
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Your Garmin cannot find the address you entered in its map database. This is usually because the address is very new (built after the last map update), the address format is slightly wrong, or the address is in a region not covered by your installed maps. You can often get there by entering a nearby intersection or postcode/ZIP code instead.
Affected Models
- Garmin DriveSmart 55
- Garmin DriveSmart 65
- Garmin Drive 52
- Garmin Nuvi series
- All Garmin GPS devices
Common Causes
- New development not yet in the map database
- Street name spelled differently in the database
- Address number outside the mapped range
- Map not installed for that region
- Rural address not mapped at street level
How to Fix It
-
Try entering just the postcode or ZIP code and navigate to the general area.
Postcode navigation always works even when a specific house number is not in the database. Drive the last part manually.
-
Try the intersection of the street and a cross-street instead of a house number.
Garmin can navigate to intersections even when individual house numbers are missing.
-
Check the spelling — try an abbreviated form of the street type (St instead of Street, Rd instead of Road).
Map databases often abbreviate street types. If it cannot find Grove Street, try Grove St.
-
Update your maps using Garmin Express.
New addresses are added with every map update. Quarterly updates add thousands of new addresses that were previously missing.
-
Use the map touch feature to navigate — zoom in and tap the destination directly on the map.
If you know roughly where the address is, you can tap the map location directly and navigate there without an address search.
When to Call a Professional
Address searches are a map data issue, not a hardware problem. If critical addresses in your area are consistently missing, update your maps through Garmin Express.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Google Maps find an address but my Garmin cannot?
Google Maps is updated in near real-time using crowd-sourced data and satellite imagery. Garmin map databases are updated quarterly and do not always include brand-new addresses immediately. Updating Garmin maps usually closes this gap for recent developments.
Can I report a missing address to Garmin?
Yes — Garmin has a map correction tool called Garmin Map Reporter. You can submit missing or incorrect addresses, and Garmin may include the fix in a future map update. This helps other Garmin users in your area too.
