Device Frozen

Garmin GPS Navigation Device

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Your Garmin screen is stuck and not responding to taps or button presses. This is usually caused by a software crash, overheating, or a memory issue. A forced restart almost always fixes a frozen Garmin instantly.

Affected Models

  • Garmin DriveSmart 55
  • Garmin DriveSmart 65
  • Garmin Drive 52
  • Garmin Nuvi series
  • All Garmin GPS devices

Common Causes

  • Software crash or hang
  • Device overheated (left in direct sun)
  • Low memory causing the system to lock up
  • Corrupted file or map data
  • Electrical issue from USB power adapter

How to Fix It

  1. Hold the power button for 10–15 seconds until the device restarts.

This is a forced restart — it is safe and will not delete your data. It fixes most freeze situations immediately.

  2. If the device will not restart, disconnect it from power and wait 30 seconds.

Some Garmin models drain residual power when disconnected. After 30 seconds, reconnect and try the power button again.

  3. Check if the device is overheated — it will be very hot to the touch.

Garmin GPS units in direct sunlight through a windshield can reach extreme temperatures. Move to the shade and let it cool before restarting.

  4. After restarting, update the firmware via Garmin Express.

Software bugs that cause freezing are often fixed in firmware updates.

  5. If freezing happens repeatedly, perform a factory reset (Settings > System > Reset).

A factory reset fixes corrupted settings or data that cause recurring freezes. Back up your favourites first.

When to Call a Professional

If the device freezes repeatedly — especially during the same task — the software or hardware may be faulty. A factory reset or Garmin support contact is the next step.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a forced restart delete my saved places on Garmin?

No — a forced restart (holding the power button) does not delete any data. Your saved favourites, home, work, and recent destinations are all preserved. Only a factory reset clears your personal data.

Why does my Garmin keep freezing?

Recurring freezing usually means low storage, outdated software, or a corrupted map file. Update the firmware, free up storage by removing unused maps, and see if that stops it. If it continues after a factory reset, the hardware may need servicing.
