Map Not Installed

Garmin GPS Navigation Device

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Your Garmin device has no map data installed for your region. This can happen after a factory reset, after a failed update that deleted the old maps, or on a brand-new device where maps were not pre-loaded. You need to reinstall maps using Garmin Express on a computer.

Affected Models

  • Garmin DriveSmart 55
  • Garmin DriveSmart 65
  • Garmin Drive 52
  • Garmin Nuvi series
  • All Garmin GPS devices

Common Causes

  • Factory reset deleted installed maps
  • Failed map update left the device without maps
  • Maps installed on a memory card that is no longer inserted
  • Map region was manually deleted
  • New device — maps not yet installed

How to Fix It

  1. Connect the Garmin device to a computer with the USB cable.

Use the original cable — third-party cables often cause data transfer issues during map installation.

  2. Open Garmin Express and select your device.

If Garmin Express is not installed, download it from Garmin's website first. It is free.

  3. Check if a map update or map install is available and click Add Maps or Install.

Garmin Express will show available maps for your device. If your device includes lifetime maps, the install is free.

  4. Wait for the download and installation to complete — do not disconnect.

Map installation can take 30–90 minutes depending on the map region size and your internet speed.

  5. If you use a microSD card for maps, ensure the card is properly inserted.

Some Garmin devices store maps on a removable card. If the card was removed or is corrupted, maps will show as missing.

When to Call a Professional

If Garmin Express cannot install maps after multiple attempts, contact Garmin support. Your device may need a warranty replacement if internal storage is corrupted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to pay for Garmin maps?

Most modern Garmin devices include lifetime map updates for free. For older devices, maps may need to be purchased separately. Garmin Express will clearly show whether maps for your device are free or paid.

Can I install maps from a USB drive instead of downloading?

No — Garmin maps must be installed through Garmin Express directly from Garmin's servers. Maps are locked to your specific device and cannot be transferred from USB drives or other devices.
