Maps Not Updating

Garmin GPS Navigation Device

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Your Garmin maps are out of date and the update process is not completing. Garmin maps are updated through Garmin Express software on a computer — they cannot update over Wi-Fi on most models. This is usually caused by a slow connection, low disk space, or an outdated version of Garmin Express.

Affected Models

  • Garmin DriveSmart 55
  • Garmin DriveSmart 65
  • Garmin Drive 52
  • Garmin Nuvi series
  • All Garmin GPS devices

Common Causes

  • Garmin Express software is outdated
  • Not enough free space on the device or computer
  • USB cable connection issue during update
  • Slow internet connection timing out the download
  • Map subscription has expired

How to Fix It

  1. Download and install the latest version of Garmin Express from Garmin's website.

Old versions of Garmin Express often fail to update maps properly. Always start with a fresh install.

  2. Connect your Garmin device to the computer using the original USB cable.

Third-party cables sometimes cause data transfer errors. Use the cable that came with the device.

  3. Check that your computer has at least 4 GB of free disk space.

Map files are large. If your computer's disk is nearly full, the update will fail mid-download.

  4. Start the update and leave it running — do not disconnect the device.

Map updates can take 30–90 minutes on a standard broadband connection. Disconnecting mid-update corrupts the map files.

  5. If the update fails repeatedly, try a different USB port or a different computer.

Some USB ports do not supply consistent power. A powered USB hub or a different computer can resolve this.

When to Call a Professional

If map updates consistently fail after trying multiple computers and cables, contact Garmin support. If your map subscription has expired, you will need to purchase a new one from Garmin.
