Night Mode Not Switching
Garmin GPS Navigator
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Garmin night mode only switches automatically when set to Auto and the device has a correct GPS time and location. Go to Settings > Display > Color Mode and set it to Auto, or switch to Night manually.
Affected Models
- Garmin DriveSmart 76
- Garmin DriveSmart 86
- Garmin Drive 52
- Garmin nuvi series
- Garmin DriveAssist 71
Common Causes
- Color Mode set to Day instead of Auto
- Incorrect time or time zone — device calculates sunset from GPS time and location
- No GPS fix — without location, the device cannot calculate local sunset time
- Firmware bug preventing automatic mode switching
How to Fix It
-
Set Color Mode to Auto in Display settings.
Go to Settings > Display > Color Mode > Auto. Auto mode switches between day and night map colours based on the calculated local sunset and sunrise times using your GPS position.
-
Verify the time zone is set correctly.
Garmin calculates sunset from your GPS coordinates and the current time. If the time zone is wrong (e.g. showing UTC when you are in UTC+2), the automatic switch will happen at the wrong time. Go to Settings > System > Time > Time Zone.
-
Ensure the device has a GPS fix before sunset.
Without GPS coordinates, the device cannot calculate local sunset. Make sure the device acquires a GPS signal before it gets dark.
-
Manually switch to Night mode if Auto is unreliable.
Go to Settings > Display > Color Mode > Night. This bypasses the automatic calculation and keeps night colours at all times. Switch back to Day in the morning, or use Auto once the time zone is corrected.
-
Update firmware using Garmin Express.
Connect the device to your computer, open Garmin Express, and install any pending updates. Automatic colour switching bugs have been fixed in firmware updates on several Garmin models.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I force night mode to stay on permanently?
Yes. Set Color Mode to Night in Settings > Display > Color Mode. This locks the map to night colours regardless of time of day.
At what time does Garmin switch to night mode automatically?
Garmin switches at the calculated local sunset time based on your GPS coordinates. This changes with the seasons and your location — in summer at northern latitudes, night mode may not activate until 10 PM.
