Software Update Failed

Garmin GPS Navigation Device

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

The firmware update for your Garmin device did not complete successfully. This can leave the device in a partially updated state which may cause instability. The most common causes are a poor USB connection, low disk space on your computer, or the device losing power during the update.

Affected Models

  • Garmin DriveSmart 55
  • Garmin DriveSmart 65
  • Garmin Drive 52
  • Garmin Nuvi series
  • All Garmin GPS devices

Common Causes

  • USB connection dropped during the update
  • Computer went to sleep mid-update
  • Not enough free disk space on the computer
  • Outdated version of Garmin Express
  • Device battery too low before update started

How to Fix It

  1. Restart both the computer and the Garmin device, then try again.

A clean start clears any stuck update state. Most failed updates succeed on the second attempt.

  2. Update Garmin Express to the latest version before trying again.

Old versions of Garmin Express have known bugs with update installation. Always use the latest version.

  3. Disable your computer's sleep/screensaver during the update.

If the computer sleeps mid-update, the USB connection drops and the update fails. Prevent sleep in your power settings before starting.

  4. Try a different USB port — preferably a direct port, not a USB hub.

Powered USB hubs sometimes deliver inconsistent power which interrupts updates.

  5. Ensure your computer has at least 2 GB of free disk space.

Garmin Express downloads the update to your computer first. If disk space runs out, the update fails at the end.

When to Call a Professional

If the update fails repeatedly and the device is stuck in a boot loop or showing a black screen, contact Garmin support immediately. Do not try to force a factory reset on a device that is stuck mid-update.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my Garmin damaged if the update failed?

Usually not — a failed update rarely causes permanent damage. Most of the time the device boots normally and you can simply retry the update. The only dangerous scenario is if the device lost power when the update was writing to internal memory — contact Garmin support in that case.

How long does a Garmin software update take?

A firmware update typically takes 10–20 minutes. A map update can take 30–90 minutes depending on the region and internet speed. Do not disconnect the device until Garmin Express shows a green success tick.
