Speed Camera Alerts Not Working

Garmin GPS Navigator

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Garmin speed camera alerts stop working when the speed camera database is outdated, the alert feature is disabled in settings, or the device maps are not up to date. Update the speed camera database using Garmin Express and confirm alerts are enabled in the device settings.

Affected Models

  • Garmin DriveSmart 76
  • Garmin DriveSmart 86
  • Garmin DriveAssist 71
  • Garmin Drive 52
  • Garmin nuvi series

Common Causes

  • Speed camera database out of date — cameras have moved or new ones added
  • Speed camera alerts turned off in device settings
  • Maps not updated — new road data does not include recent camera locations
  • Lifetime map and traffic subscription expired
  • Device does not have a built-in speed camera database for the current region

How to Fix It

  1. Update the speed camera database using Garmin Express on your computer.

Connect the Garmin to your computer via USB. Open Garmin Express, select your device, and install any available speed camera or map updates. Garmin updates its speed camera database regularly — an outdated database misses new cameras and removes decommissioned ones.

  2. Confirm speed camera alerts are enabled on the device.

On the device go to Settings > Driver Assistance > Speed Cameras and make sure the setting is turned on. Also check that the alert volume is not muted under Settings > Sound.

  3. Check that your map subscription is still active.

Garmin devices with Lifetime Maps receive free map and camera database updates for the lifetime of the device. If your subscription has expired, updates require a paid renewal. Go to Garmin Express to check status.

  4. Verify that speed cameras are available for your current country or region.

Not all Garmin devices include speed camera data for every country. Check the Garmin product page for your device to confirm which regions are supported.

  5. Perform a device reset if updates do not resolve the issue.

Go to Settings > Device > Reset > Reset All Settings. This does not delete maps or saved locations but restores all alert settings to their defaults.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Garmin include speed camera alerts for free?

Many Garmin models include a speed camera database as part of the Lifetime Maps package. Devices without Lifetime Maps may require a separate subscription or paid update for speed camera data.

Why does Garmin alert me to cameras that no longer exist?

Camera locations change frequently — authorities relocate, remove, or add cameras. An outdated database contains old data. Updating via Garmin Express removes decommissioned cameras and adds new ones.
