Time Zone Wrong
Garmin GPS Navigator
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Garmin GPS devices automatically set the time from GPS satellites, but the time zone must be set manually. Go to Settings > System > Time > Time Zone and select your correct time zone.
Affected Models
- Garmin DriveSmart 76
- Garmin DriveSmart 86
- Garmin Drive 52
- Garmin nuvi series
- Garmin DriveAssist 71
Common Causes
- Time zone set to Automatic but GPS satellite time zone detection is incorrect for the region
- Time zone manually set to the wrong zone
- Daylight Saving Time (DST) not applied correctly
- Device not yet acquired GPS signal — using cached time
- Firmware bug causing DST offset to be applied twice
How to Fix It
-
Set the time zone manually in Settings.
Go to Settings > System > Time > Time Zone. Uncheck Automatic and scroll to select your correct time zone from the list. Automatic time zone detection from GPS is unreliable near time zone borders.
-
Check the Daylight Saving Time (DST) setting.
Go to Settings > System > Time > Daylight Saving Time. If DST has recently changed in your region, the device may need this updated manually — set it to your regional DST schedule or On/Off as appropriate.
-
Acquire a clear GPS signal before checking the time.
Take the device outside or near a window until the GPS indicator shows a solid fix. The device uses the last-known time when GPS is not locked, which may be stale.
-
Update device firmware using Garmin Express.
Connect the Garmin to your computer via USB and open Garmin Express. Install any pending firmware updates — time zone and DST fixes are occasionally delivered via firmware.
-
Perform a device reset if time remains wrong after the above steps.
Go to Settings > System > Reset > Reset All Settings. This does not erase maps or favourites but resets all system settings including time zone to default.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Garmin set the time automatically from GPS?
Yes — Garmin derives the time from GPS satellite signals (which transmit UTC time) and then applies the time zone offset you have configured. If GPS is working but the time is wrong, the time zone setting is the culprit.
Why is my Garmin one hour off after the clocks changed?
Garmin's DST setting may not have updated automatically. Manually go to Settings > System > Time > Daylight Saving Time and toggle it to match the current DST state in your region.
