Traffic Not Loading
Garmin GPS Navigation Device
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Your Garmin is not showing live traffic data. Live traffic on Garmin requires either a connected phone running the Garmin Drive app, or a built-in traffic receiver in older models. If the phone connection is working, the issue is usually the Garmin Drive app not having mobile data access.
Affected Models
- Garmin DriveSmart 55
- Garmin DriveSmart 65
- Garmin Drive 52
- Garmin Nuvi 2797 (built-in receiver)
- All Garmin GPS devices
Common Causes
- Phone not connected via Bluetooth to Garmin
- Garmin Drive app does not have mobile data permission
- Phone mobile data is off
- Garmin Drive app needs an update
- Traffic service not available in your region
How to Fix It
-
Open the Garmin Drive app on your phone and confirm it shows your Garmin device as connected.
Traffic is streamed from your phone through the app to the Garmin device. No app connection = no traffic data.
-
Ensure mobile data is enabled on your phone and the Garmin Drive app has data permission.
Go to your phone settings, find Garmin Drive, and make sure it is allowed to use mobile data.
-
Update the Garmin Drive app from the App Store or Google Play.
Old app versions sometimes fail to push traffic data to the device.
-
On the Garmin device, go to Settings > Traffic and ensure traffic is enabled.
Traffic can be turned off in settings. Make sure the toggle is switched on.
-
Re-pair the phone via Bluetooth if the connection has been lost.
If Bluetooth drops, traffic stops. Re-pair using Settings > Bluetooth on the Garmin.
When to Call a Professional
Traffic data is a software/connectivity feature — it does not require professional repair. If traffic has never worked on your device and you have verified the connection, contact Garmin support to confirm your model supports live traffic.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Garmin traffic use my phone data?
Yes — when using the Garmin Drive app, live traffic data is downloaded using your phone's mobile data. This uses a small amount of data — typically less than 5 MB per hour. If you have a limited data plan, this is unlikely to be noticeable.
Is Garmin live traffic free?
On most current Garmin models with Bluetooth, live traffic via the Garmin Drive app is free. Older models with built-in FM traffic receivers required a paid subscription or included a receiver with a limited free period. Check your device manual for its specific traffic setup.
