Voice Guidance Not Working

Garmin GPS Navigation Device

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Your Garmin is not speaking turn-by-turn directions. This is almost always caused by the volume being turned to zero, the voice language being deleted, or the audio output being set to an external source that is not connected. A quick check of the volume and audio settings fixes most cases.

Affected Models

  • Garmin DriveSmart 55
  • Garmin DriveSmart 65
  • Garmin Drive 52
  • Garmin Nuvi series
  • All Garmin GPS devices with speakers

Common Causes

  • Device or navigation volume turned to zero
  • Audio set to output through Bluetooth or FM transmitter (not the speaker)
  • Voice language file deleted or corrupted
  • Muted during a call and not restored
  • Speaker hardware fault (rare)

How to Fix It

  1. Press the volume buttons and confirm the volume bar is not at zero.

The most common cause — volume is accidentally turned all the way down. Press the up button until the bar appears.

  2. Go to Settings > Navigation > Voice Language and ensure a voice is selected.

If no voice is selected or the voice file is missing, the device has nothing to speak. Re-select your language.

  3. Check Settings > Navigation > Audio and confirm the audio output is set to the device speaker.

If audio is routed to Bluetooth or FM transmitter and those are not connected, you will hear nothing.

  4. Check Settings > Navigation > Guidance Prompts and confirm it is not set to None.

The prompts setting controls what the voice says. Setting it to None silences all voice directions.

  5. Restart the device to reset the audio system.

A software audio crash can silence the speaker. A restart fixes this.

When to Call a Professional

If you hear no sound at all from the device even after maximum volume is set, the speaker may be faulty. Contact Garmin support or an electronics repair shop.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add more voice options to my Garmin GPS?

Yes — Garmin devices support multiple voice languages. You can download additional voices through Garmin Express. Some voices include street name announcements; others only say generic turn directions.

Can I connect Garmin to my car speakers for voice guidance?

Some Garmin models have an FM transmitter that broadcasts audio to your car radio. You can also connect via an aux cable or Bluetooth audio to a compatible car stereo. Check your device's settings for audio output options.
