Wi-Fi Connection Failed
Garmin GPS Navigation Device
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Your Garmin device cannot connect to your home Wi-Fi network. This is needed for over-the-air map and software updates on newer Garmin models. The most common causes are an incorrect Wi-Fi password, the router being too far away, or the Wi-Fi network using a security type the Garmin does not support.
Affected Models
- Garmin DriveSmart 55
- Garmin DriveSmart 65
- Garmin DriveSmart 86
- Garmin RV 890
- Wi-Fi enabled Garmin GPS models
Common Causes
- Incorrect Wi-Fi password entered
- Router too far from the Garmin device
- Network uses WPA3 security (some Garmin models only support WPA2)
- 5 GHz Wi-Fi band selected (Garmin uses 2.4 GHz only)
- MAC address filtering blocking the Garmin
How to Fix It
-
Confirm you are entering the correct Wi-Fi password — it is case sensitive.
An incorrect password is the most common cause. Double check every character including upper/lower case and symbols.
-
Move the Garmin device within 3 metres of the router during setup.
Garmin GPS devices have a basic Wi-Fi antenna. A weak signal during initial setup causes connection failures.
-
Connect to the 2.4 GHz network band, not the 5 GHz band.
Garmin GPS devices only support 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Many modern routers broadcast both bands — select the one ending in 2.4G or labelled accordingly.
-
Temporarily disable WPA3 security on your router if it is enabled.
Some older Garmin models do not support WPA3. Setting the router to WPA2 or mixed mode allows the Garmin to connect.
-
Restart your router and try connecting again.
A router restart clears connection tables and often resolves devices that refuse to connect.
When to Call a Professional
Wi-Fi connection issues are configuration problems, not hardware failures. If Wi-Fi consistently fails on multiple networks, the Garmin Wi-Fi module may be faulty — contact Garmin support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Garmin GPS need Wi-Fi to work?
No — Garmin GPS navigation works completely without Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi is only used for downloading map and software updates directly on the device. You can always update using a computer and Garmin Express via USB instead.
Can Garmin update maps over Wi-Fi without a computer?
Yes — newer Garmin models can download map updates directly over Wi-Fi without needing Garmin Express. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi and connect, then check for updates in the update menu. This is the easiest update method if you have a compatible model.
