Lane Assistance Not Working

TomTom GPS Navigator

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

TomTom lane assistance stops working when the feature is turned off in settings, the maps are out of date (lane data requires frequent map updates), or the road you are on does not have lane data in the TomTom database.

Affected Models

  • TomTom GO Classic
  • TomTom GO Essential
  • TomTom GO Comfort
  • TomTom GO Supreme
  • TomTom Via series

Common Causes

  • Lane guidance feature disabled in the device settings
  • Maps out of date — lane data requires up-to-date map files
  • Current road or junction not mapped with lane data in TomTom database
  • Route not calculated — lane guidance only appears during active navigation
  • Device firmware out of date

How to Fix It

  1. Confirm lane guidance is enabled in TomTom settings.

Tap the main menu > Settings > Appearance > Lane Guidance and make sure it is turned on. On some models the setting is under Route Planning > Show lane guidance.

  2. Make sure you are in active navigation mode.

Lane assistance only appears when you have set a destination and the device is guiding you along a route. It does not show during free driving without a route set.

  3. Update your TomTom maps using TomTom MyDrive Connect.

Connect the device to your computer via USB and open TomTom MyDrive Connect. Install any available map updates. Lane data is embedded in the map files and is updated regularly by TomTom.

  4. Update the device firmware via TomTom MyDrive Connect.

After updating maps, check for a firmware update in the same application. Firmware updates occasionally fix display bugs that cause lane guidance graphics not to appear.

  5. Accept that some roads simply do not have lane data.

TomTom lane guidance is only available on roads that TomTom has mapped with detailed lane information — mainly motorways and major dual carriageways. Smaller roads, roundabouts, and local roads often have no lane data regardless of settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does lane guidance disappear mid-route on TomTom?

Lane guidance disappears when the upcoming section of road has no lane data in the TomTom database. This is normal — it reappears when you reach a junction that does have lane information.

Does TomTom lane guidance work on roundabouts?

Most roundabouts are not included in lane guidance data. TomTom lane guidance focuses on motorway junctions and major splits where lane choice has a significant impact on navigation.
