Maps Out of Date

TomTom GPS Navigation Device

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Your TomTom map data is older than the latest available version. New roads, address changes, speed limit updates, and points of interest may be missing. Updating maps is free on devices with lifetime maps, and takes 30–90 minutes via MyDrive Connect or Wi-Fi.

Affected Models

  • TomTom GO 520
  • TomTom GO 620
  • TomTom GO 5200
  • TomTom GO 6200
  • All TomTom GPS devices

Common Causes

  • Maps not updated since purchase
  • MyDrive Connect not opened recently
  • Wi-Fi update not enabled on device
  • Previous update failed partway through
  • Map subscription required for updates (older models)

How to Fix It

  1. Connect your TomTom to your computer via USB and open MyDrive Connect.

MyDrive Connect checks for available updates automatically when the device is connected.

  2. Click Update Maps and wait for the download and installation to complete.

Map downloads can be 1–4 GB depending on the region. Use a fast connection and do not disconnect.

  3. Alternatively, connect to your home Wi-Fi on the TomTom and update directly on the device.

Newer TomTom GO models can download map updates directly over Wi-Fi without a computer.

  4. Set up automatic Wi-Fi updates to keep maps current without manual effort.

Go to Settings > Wi-Fi and enable automatic updates. The device downloads updates overnight when connected to home Wi-Fi.

  5. If the update requires purchase, visit TomTom's website to buy a map update for your model.

Older TomTom models without lifetime maps require purchasing updates. Newer models with lifetime maps update for free.

When to Call a Professional

Map updates do not require professional help. If every update attempt fails, see the Map Update Error page for troubleshooting.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I update my TomTom maps?

TomTom releases map updates approximately four times per year. For most users, updating every 3–6 months keeps navigation accurate. If you drive in areas that are developing quickly, more frequent updates help.

Can I use TomTom with old maps?

Yes — old maps still work for navigation. You may notice missing roads, wrong speed limits, or closed points of interest. In stable areas with few road changes, old maps can remain usable for years.
