Offline Navigation Not Working
TomTom GPS Navigator
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
TomTom dedicated GPS devices (GO Classic, Essential, Comfort) always navigate offline using stored maps. If navigation is failing, the maps may be missing, corrupted, or uninstalled. Reinstall maps using TomTom MyDrive Connect.
Affected Models
- TomTom GO Classic
- TomTom GO Essential
- TomTom GO Comfort
- TomTom GO Supreme
- TomTom Via series
Common Causes
- Maps not installed or deleted from the device
- Map data corrupted during a failed update
- Insufficient internal storage — map installation incomplete
- Maps installed for the wrong region (e.g. US maps on a device used in Europe)
- Device software error preventing access to stored map files
How to Fix It
-
Connect to TomTom MyDrive Connect and check if maps are installed.
Plug the device into your computer via USB and open TomTom MyDrive Connect. Select your device and go to the Maps section. Any missing or corrupted maps will appear with a warning. Download and install them.
-
Check available storage on the device.
In TomTom MyDrive Connect or on the device itself, check free storage space. A full device cannot install complete map files and will leave partial data that causes navigation errors. Delete unused maps for other regions to free space.
-
Delete and reinstall the map for your region.
In MyDrive Connect, uninstall the current map, then reinstall it from scratch. A corrupted partial map is often worse than no map — a clean reinstall resolves most navigation failures.
-
Confirm you have the correct regional map installed.
A device with only European maps will not navigate in North America, and vice versa. In MyDrive Connect check which regions are installed and add the correct one.
-
Perform a device reset if map installation does not resolve the issue.
On the device go to Settings > System > Reset Device. Note that a factory reset may remove maps — you will need to reinstall them afterwards via MyDrive Connect.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does TomTom need internet to navigate?
No. TomTom dedicated GPS devices navigate entirely offline using maps stored on the device. Internet is only needed to download live traffic updates, speed camera data, and map updates.
Can I use a TomTom device in a country it was not sold in?
Yes — as long as you install the map for that region via TomTom MyDrive Connect before you travel. TomTom sells regional map packs separately.
