Traffic Not Updating

TomTom GPS Navigation Device

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Your TomTom is not receiving or displaying live traffic data. TomTom Traffic works via a connected smartphone (through the TomTom MyDrive app) or a built-in SIM on some premium models. If your phone connection is working, the problem is usually the app not having mobile data permission.

Affected Models

  • TomTom GO 520
  • TomTom GO 620
  • TomTom GO 5200
  • TomTom GO 6200
  • TomTom GO Premium (built-in SIM)

Common Causes

  • Phone not connected to TomTom via Bluetooth
  • TomTom MyDrive app lacks mobile data permission
  • TomTom Traffic subscription expired
  • App needs an update
  • Traffic not available in your region

How to Fix It

  1. Open the TomTom MyDrive app on your phone and confirm it is connected to your TomTom device.

Traffic is routed from your phone to the TomTom via Bluetooth. If the app shows disconnected, reconnect it.

  2. Check that your phone's mobile data is on and the TomTom app has data permission.

On your phone, go to app settings for TomTom MyDrive and ensure mobile data is allowed.

  3. Update the TomTom MyDrive app from the App Store or Google Play.

Old app versions sometimes fail to transmit traffic data properly.

  4. On the TomTom device, go to Settings > Traffic and verify traffic is enabled.

Traffic can be disabled in settings. Make sure the toggle is on.

  5. Check your TomTom account at TomTom's website to confirm your Traffic subscription is active.

Some older TomTom devices require a paid Traffic subscription. If it has lapsed, traffic will not work.

When to Call a Professional

Traffic is a software/connectivity feature. If you have verified the connection and subscription and traffic still does not work, contact TomTom support to check your account status.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is TomTom Traffic free?

On current TomTom GO models with Bluetooth, traffic via the MyDrive app is free for life. Older models required a paid traffic subscription via HD Traffic or RDS-TMC receiver. Check your device's specifications to confirm what is included.

How accurate is TomTom Traffic data?

TomTom processes data from millions of connected devices to provide real-time traffic. In busy urban areas, accuracy is excellent. In rural areas with fewer connected drivers, data may be less complete.
