Battery Draining Fast During Waze Navigation
Waze Navigation App
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Waze drains battery fast because it uses GPS, screen backlight, mobile data, and audio simultaneously — this is normal for navigation apps. Keep your phone plugged in while navigating and enable Waze's battery saver settings to reduce drain.
Affected Models
- Waze for iOS (iPhone)
- Waze for Android
- All smartphones running Waze
Common Causes
- GPS continuously active at full accuracy — the largest battery drain component
- Screen kept at full brightness — navigation requires the screen to stay on
- Mobile data used for live traffic updates, map tiles, and hazard reports
- Waze display showing animation and color map — graphically intensive rendering
- Background app activity — Waze keeps running and updating even when the screen is off
How to Fix It
-
Keep the phone plugged in while navigating.
Waze (and all navigation apps) are designed to be used with the phone charging in the car. Use a car charger or the car's USB port — a 20W or higher charger ensures the battery charges even during navigation. If using CarPlay wirelessly, note that wireless CarPlay draws more battery power than wired.
-
Enable Waze dark theme and reduce screen brightness.
In Waze, tap Search → Settings → Display & Map → Color scheme → Night (dark mode). Dark mode significantly reduces battery drain on OLED screens. Also lower screen brightness to the lowest comfortable level — the screen is the second-largest battery drain after GPS.
-
Disable Waze screen always-on if you do not need it.
In Waze Settings → General, look for Prevent screen lock while navigating and turn it off if you have CarPlay or audio navigation and do not need to see the screen. Allowing the screen to auto-lock during navigation reduces battery drain significantly.
-
Close other apps running in the background.
Before starting Waze, close all other apps running in the background on your phone. On iPhone, swipe up from the bottom to see background apps and swipe them away. Background apps competing for CPU and network resources increase overall battery drain during navigation.
-
Enable battery saver mode on your phone.
On both Android and iPhone, Low Power / Battery Saver mode reduces background CPU usage and network activity without significantly affecting Waze navigation accuracy. Activate it before long trips if you are relying on battery power without a charger. Note that Low Power Mode on iPhone may reduce screen brightness automatically.
When to Call a Professional
Excessive battery drain from Waze is a software behavior, not a hardware fault. If Waze drains the battery faster than your charger can replenish it even when plugged in, switch to Google Maps or Apple Maps for a comparison — some phones have power delivery issues with navigation apps.
