Waze Voice Directions Not Playing via Bluetooth
Waze Navigation App
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Waze Bluetooth audio not working usually means your phone is sending audio to the wrong Bluetooth profile — Waze needs media audio (A2DP), not just call audio (HFP). Check that your car stereo is connected for media audio, not only for hands-free calls.
Affected Models
- Waze for iOS (iPhone)
- Waze for Android
- All Bluetooth-connected car stereo setups
Common Causes
- Car connected for hands-free calling only (HFP profile) — Waze voice uses the media audio (A2DP) profile
- Waze audio output set to phone speaker in app settings instead of Bluetooth
- Another app (music, podcast) taking priority over the Bluetooth audio connection
- iPhone directing Waze audio to the earpiece instead of Bluetooth — audio routing issue after a call
- Car stereo requiring a specific Bluetooth pairing mode for media audio
How to Fix It
-
Confirm Bluetooth is connected for media audio.
On Android, go to Settings → Bluetooth → tap your car → confirm both Media Audio and Phone Calls are enabled. On iPhone, there is no separate toggle — but the car stereo must support A2DP profile for Waze voice to play through speakers. If your car only supports HFP (hands-free profile), Waze voice routes to the phone speaker by default.
-
Check Waze audio output settings.
In Waze, tap Search → Settings → Voice & sound. Confirm that Sound is enabled and the output is not set to 'Phone only' or 'Silent.' If Waze has a Bluetooth speaker option listed, select it. On some Android versions, Waze has an explicit audio output toggle in its settings.
-
Start Waze after connecting Bluetooth.
Connect your phone to the car Bluetooth first, then open Waze. If Waze is already open when you connect Bluetooth, it may have already routed audio to the phone speaker. Close Waze completely, connect Bluetooth, then relaunch Waze — this forces Waze to detect the Bluetooth audio route on startup.
-
Play music through the car Bluetooth first.
Start playing a song from Spotify or Apple Music through the car Bluetooth to establish the A2DP media audio connection. Then switch to Waze — the media audio path is already established and Waze can interrupt it for voice directions. This workaround resolves issues where Waze starts before the media Bluetooth profile is active.
-
Re-pair the Bluetooth connection.
On your phone, forget the car Bluetooth device and delete the phone from the car stereo pairing list. Re-pair from scratch following your car stereo manual. During pairing, accept any permission prompts for both media audio and phone calls — declining media audio permission prevents Waze (and music) from playing through the car speakers.
When to Call a Professional
Bluetooth audio routing issues are usually phone and car stereo pairing behaviors, not Waze bugs. If Waze audio works with headphones but not through the car stereo, the car stereo Bluetooth A2DP profile may be limited. Check your car stereo manual.
