Waze Not Working on CarPlay
Waze Navigation App
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Waze not working on CarPlay is usually caused by Waze not being enabled in iPhone CarPlay settings, a bad Lightning or USB-C cable, or the Waze app needing an update. Check iPhone Settings → General → CarPlay → your car → Customize to confirm Waze is added.
Affected Models
- Waze for iOS (iPhone)
- Any CarPlay-compatible vehicle
- Any CarPlay-compatible head unit
Common Causes
- Waze not added to the CarPlay home screen — must be enabled in iPhone CarPlay settings
- Faulty or uncertified charging cable — non-MFi cables frequently lose CarPlay connectivity
- Waze app outdated — CarPlay compatibility breaks with certain app versions after iOS updates
- iPhone not trusted by the car head unit — Trust prompt missed
- Car head unit firmware out of date — some vehicles need firmware updates for full CarPlay app compatibility
How to Fix It
-
Add Waze to the CarPlay home screen.
On your iPhone, go to Settings → General → CarPlay → select your car → Customize. If Waze is in the More Apps list at the bottom, tap the green + button to add it to the CarPlay home screen. Waze does not appear on CarPlay until it is explicitly added here — this is a one-time setup step.
-
Use an Apple MFi-certified cable.
Non-certified Lightning or USB-C cables frequently drop CarPlay connections or fail to start CarPlay at all. Use the Apple cable that came with your iPhone or a cable with the 'Made for iPhone' (MFi) certification label. Avoid third-party cables sold without MFi certification — they are a very common cause of intermittent CarPlay problems.
-
Update the Waze app.
Open the App Store, search for Waze, and install any available update. After updating, restart your iPhone by holding the side button and swiping to power off. Older versions of Waze occasionally lose CarPlay compatibility after iOS updates until Waze releases a patch.
-
Trust the car from the iPhone prompt.
When connecting iPhone to CarPlay for the first time (or after a phone restart), a Trust This Computer prompt may appear on the iPhone screen. If you did not tap Trust, CarPlay will not start. Unplug the cable, reconnect it, and watch the iPhone screen for the Trust prompt — tap Trust promptly.
-
Reset CarPlay settings on the iPhone.
Go to iPhone Settings → General → CarPlay → select your car → Forget This Car. Reconnect the USB cable to re-pair CarPlay from scratch. Also try resetting network settings: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Network Settings. Note this will also forget saved Wi-Fi passwords.
When to Call a Professional
If Waze still does not appear in CarPlay after all steps, the issue may be with your car's head unit compatibility. Contact your car dealer or head unit manufacturer for a firmware update.
