No Traffic Data / Traffic Colors Missing
Waze Navigation App
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Waze showing no traffic data is usually caused by traffic display being turned off in the app settings or a poor mobile data connection preventing live traffic updates from downloading. Check Waze Settings → Display & Map and ensure Traffic is toggled on.
Affected Models
- Waze for iOS (iPhone)
- Waze for Android
- All smartphones running Waze
Common Causes
- Traffic display turned off in Waze settings — the traffic layer has its own toggle
- No mobile data connection — Waze requires internet access for live traffic
- Driving in an area with very few Waze users — traffic data relies on crowdsourced reports
- Waze app cache corrupted — old map data prevents fresh traffic tiles from loading
- Waze server-side issue — traffic data occasionally unavailable during Waze outages
How to Fix It
-
Enable the traffic layer in Waze settings.
In Waze, tap the magnifying glass → Settings → Display & Map. Scroll down and find Traffic — confirm it is toggled on. If you previously turned off traffic to reduce data usage or improve app performance, this setting stays off until you manually re-enable it.
-
Check your mobile data connection.
Waze needs a live internet connection to download traffic data — traffic does not work offline. Open a browser or other app to confirm mobile data is working. If data is slow or intermittent, Waze may show old or no traffic colors until the connection improves.
-
Clear the Waze app cache.
On Android: Settings → Apps → Waze → Storage → Clear Cache. On iPhone: delete Waze and reinstall it from the App Store (iOS has no separate cache clear option). A corrupted map cache prevents new traffic tiles from loading over old ones.
-
Update the Waze map data.
In Waze, tap Search → Settings → Map & GPS → Update maps. Downloading the latest map update can restore traffic data availability in areas where the map was outdated. Ensure you are on Wi-Fi before downloading a map update — map files are large.
-
Check for a Waze service outage.
Waze traffic data is server-dependent. Visit downdetector.com or check Waze's Twitter/X account for reports of widespread outages. If many users are reporting missing traffic data simultaneously, a server-side fix is needed and will resolve on its own — there is nothing to do on your end.
When to Call a Professional
Traffic data availability depends on Waze's crowdsourced network and server infrastructure. If traffic consistently shows as unavailable in areas where you previously saw it, check downdetector.com/status/waze for service outage reports.
