Firmware Update Failed

ASUS Router

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

An ASUS router stuck or unresponsive after a firmware update can almost always be recovered using manual firmware restoration. Do not power off the router during the update — if it is still flashing lights, wait 10 minutes. If it is completely unresponsive, use the ASUS Firmware Restoration tool on a wired PC to push a clean firmware file.

Affected Models

  • ASUS RT-AX88U
  • ASUS RT-AX86U
  • ASUS RT-AX58U
  • ASUS ZenWiFi AX (XT8)
  • ASUS RT-AC68U

Common Causes

  • Power was lost or the router was rebooted during the firmware flash
  • The firmware file was corrupted during the download before flashing
  • Update was applied over WiFi and the connection dropped mid-flash
  • Firmware version is incompatible with the specific hardware revision

How to Fix It

  1. If the router is still flashing its power or status LED, do not power it off. Wait up to 10 minutes — a firmware flash and reboot can look like the router is frozen but is still working.

  2. If the router is completely unresponsive after 10 minutes, hold the reset button for 10 seconds to perform a factory reset. Some routers boot into a recovery web interface at 192.168.1.1 after a reset where you can manually upload firmware.

  3. Download the ASUS Firmware Restoration tool from the ASUS support website. Connect your PC to the router via Ethernet. Hold the router reset button, power it on while holding reset for 10 seconds, then release. The router enters rescue mode.

In rescue mode the router power LED flashes slowly. The Firmware Restoration tool will detect the router and allow you to push a clean firmware .trx or .w file.

  4. Download the correct firmware for your exact router model from the ASUS support site. Only use firmware files for your specific model — flashing the wrong model firmware causes a hard brick.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I always update my ASUS router firmware?

Yes — ASUS regularly releases security patches that address router vulnerabilities. However, always update via a wired Ethernet connection, never over WiFi, and only update when the router is stable. Wait a few days after a new firmware release and check the ASUS community forums for reports of issues before flashing.
